{"id":500,"date":"2026-04-28T18:21:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T18:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/500\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T18:21:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T18:21:17","slug":"afl-great-mick-malthouse-struck-alleged-intruder-in-home-raid-court-hears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/500\/","title":{"rendered":"AFL great Mick Malthouse struck alleged intruder in home raid, court hears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Legendary AFL coach Mick Malthouse smashed an intruder in the head with an exercise bar as he defended his family during an alleged attempted home invasion last year, a Melbourne court has heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">New details about the alleged break-in attempt and surrounding events were revealed in court today, as one of the three men charged made a bail application.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Victoria Police detective Tyler Sherlock alleged one of the accused, Joshua Di Cello, stole a key fob from a construction company that completed cladding work on Mr Malthouse&#8217;s apartment complex on September 1 last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Di Cello and co-accused Aysar Mashu and Andrew Carroll allegedly arrived at the complex just after midnight on September 4, and used an internal stairwell to try to break into Mr Malthouse&#8217;s penthouse, Mr Sherlock said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Malthouse described hearing noises from the front door \u2026 Malthouse confronted Di Cello, Mashu and Carroll and observed them in possession of a jimmy bar, actively trying to break through the door,&#8221; he told the court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Malthouse swung an exercise pole at them before they retreated to the basement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mick Malthouse adjusts his glasses at the football\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/a7a44a315f4a257a9aa3f4e72f69a5af.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mick Malthouse coached 718 AFL games. (AAP: Julian Smith)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A second confrontation occurred when Mr Malthouse, 72, followed the group, who were by that stage allegedly trying to break open a door to flee, the court heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Carroll raised a jimmy bar he was in possession of. Malthouse struck Carroll in the head with the exercise bar causing Carroll to drop it,&#8221; Mr Sherlock said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Malthouse was stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver by Mr Mashu, the court heard. The injuries were superficial and did not cause any organ damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">About an hour later, Mr Carroll was seen on CCTV with &#8220;a significant welt under his left eye&#8221;, Mr Sherlock said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The court heard Mr Malthouse later told officers, &#8220;I managed to crack one of them with the exercise bar \u2026 I whacked him twice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other properties allegedly targeted<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Police allege Mr Di Cello worked with others to commit a series of property and car thefts between August and September 2025.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man makes a peace sign with his hands in a selfie photo.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/e48c340ac5cebf811d1e9a0af215bdce.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">It is alleged Joshua Di Cello and two others attempted to break in to Mick Malthouse&#8217;s apartment last year. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Locations targeted included jewellery shops, offices and a Dandenong South property where $60,000 worth of boxed children&#8217;s toys were stolen, Mr Sherlock said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He is alleged to have been decked out in Nike sportswear during several of the incidents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Di Cello, Mr Mashu and Mr Carroll have since been arrested and are on remand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The trio are yet to enter a plea in respect to the alleged break-in of Mr Malthouse&#8217;s property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Di Cello&#8217;s lawyer, Nadia Giogianni, said her client was seeking bail so he could attend a drug rehabilitation centre.
