(ABC News: Nandini Dhir)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Scrap and Yap Craft Club has so far attracted university students, office workers, new migrants and academics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People want to connect with people. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Lee said she was excited to continue building the club and its community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s just so special when you&#8217;re in a packed room watching the same film and then having a chance to talk about it with people who are just as excited as you are afterwards,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Loneliness common among young adults<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The NSW Mental Health Commission found that, in a 2025 survey of about 2,000 people, 10 per cent more women aged 18 to 29 experienced loneliness compared to the state&#8217;s average.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Michelle Lim, scientific chair at Ending Loneliness Together, said young people were &#8220;predisposed to feeling lonely&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with short black hair wearing a colourful scarf.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/7e06db3f53f1f91c3b4ef11442694afe.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Michelle Lim says loneliness is a global issue. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What&#8217;s worrying is, about one in seven young people \u2026 experience persistent loneliness, so loneliness that lasts at least two years,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Lim said loneliness had been recognised globally as a social issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the most part, community helps, and young people really, really desire quantity of relationships \u2026 and this is where community can really step up,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Shared interest groups are an amazing non-stigmatised way to get connection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Keeping community affordable<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Lim said there was not enough investment in community solutions for young people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think that young people often say that &#8216;I don&#8217;t have a safe space where I can just be&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said the emergence of hobby-based clubs showed how &#8220;resourceful&#8221; Generation Z was.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two people help each other decorate their scrapbooks.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/aa10037a380d3a8bbd2fb521d0cc13cb.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Hobby-based clubs are helping combat loneliness among young adults.
