{"id":5089,"date":"2026-05-05T09:11:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T09:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/5089\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T09:11:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T09:11:17","slug":"incident-at-aussie-road-crossing-sparks-calls-for-council-review-as-safety-compromised-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/5089\/","title":{"rendered":"Incident at Aussie road crossing sparks calls for council review as safety &#8216;compromised&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Concerns have been raised about the safety of a common type of crossing after a second collision occurred at the same spot within 18 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On Monday morning, a 14-year-old girl was riding her e-bike across a shared bicycle and pedestrian crossing when she was struck by a car on Campbell Avenue in Cromer on Sydney\u2019s Northern Beaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A NSW Police spokesperson told Yahoo News emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of the collision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After arriving, police were informed that a black MG SUV had struck an e-bike. It is understood the e-bike was caught under the front of the car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cFire &amp; Rescue NSW treated the rider, a 14-year-old girl, for minor injuries, and she was taken to hospital by NSW Ambulance paramedics for further assessment,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The 26-year-old female driver underwent roadside testing and returned a negative result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Inquiries into the crash remain ongoing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Bicycle NSW CEO Peter McLean told Yahoo News the 14-year-old e-bike rider was very lucky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis young lady is very lucky she wasn&#8217;t more significantly injured, and this is an example of why helmets should be worn at all times,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis is because a bicycle rider can&#8217;t control what other road users are doing and should protect themselves in case these incidents occur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">RELATED<\/p>\n<p>Drivers urged to slow down and consider other motorists<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">McLean said the type of crossing where the incident occurred is \u201cvery safe\u201d and is commonly used across all lower-speed urban areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cDrivers need to constantly remind themselves that they share the road with vulnerable users like motorbikes, pedestrians and bicycle users, they don&#8217;t enjoy the same protection which a car provides,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Bicycle NSW has recommended that a review of the crossing be undertaken to see if any small improvements can be made to increase safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The review could look into reducing speed limits for motorists, surface treatments and ensuring there aren\u2019t opportunities for sight lines to be blocked, McLean said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cVegetation, incorrectly parked cars and other distractions sometimes compromise a safe crossing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"This photograph shows a fat bike, an electric bicycle, in Paris on April 30, 2026. \" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/c578558b-11ed-4e24-beec-dc25cfa1da08.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The increase in e-bikes on Aussie roads means drivers have to be even more alert.
