(Flickr)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It can be illegally added to alcoholic beverages, can also be accidentally created during poor-quality alcohol production and distillation and is a risk in some popular overseas destinations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-11-19\/methanol-poisoning-laos-thailand-alcohol-australians\/104617394\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What is methanol poisoning and how can I protect myself?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">One Australian teenager has died and another is fighting for her life in a Thai hospital after they consumed drinks suspected to contain methanol in Laos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Adelaide University researchers at the Centre of Light for Life have developed a way of shaping lasers to be able to determine if there is methanol inside sealed bottles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We make a cone shaping and this allows us to go through the bottle and we avoid all the signals coming from the glass of the bottle,&#8221; said PhD candidate An\u00e9 Kritzinger,<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[Then] we change the colour, or the wavelength of the laser slightly, while we&#8217;re taking measurements, and this allows us to pick up very small amounts of the methanol that&#8217;s inside of the bottle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;With all of this combined we can detect methanol at a concentration of 0.2 per cent inside any bottle. (Supplied: Adelaide University)<\/p>\n<p>Real-life applications<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Kritzinger said the gold standard for testing if alcohol had methanol in it was a process called chromatography, whereby containers of alcohol had to be opened and a sample needed to be tested in a lab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said that would likely continue to be the case, but hoped the new technique would offer a more practical solution when they could make a smaller, more accessible device.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When we make this handheld, this could be used for example in distilleries, at bars, at border control; anywhere, really,&#8221; said Ralf Mouthaan, one of the other researchers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with glasses wearing a grey jumper looks at a screen with a graph on it\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/d50be6bcd3b8b49968c37a9b4719fa93.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The researchers are confident they can use the technology in a handheld device.
