resulting in safer roads and less emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But today the government revealed it has axed funding for the project beyond the regional New South Wales town of Parkes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Brisbane to Melbourne inland rail alignment map, April 2021\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/e286ad99931ad309cc3352b8bf5edb65.png\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Inland Rail project&#8217;s original route from Melbourne to Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Construction between the Victorian town of Beveridge and Parkes will be completed by the end of next year, through the reallocation of $1.75 billion in previously announced &#8220;off-budget&#8221; funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This will enable double-stacked freight trains to travel between Melbourne and Perth via Parkes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said the government was &#8220;taking sensible decisions to realign the future of Inland Rail and build a safe, efficient and reliable network for the future&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2025, Ms King described Inland Rail as a &#8220;really significant project that the Australian Government is very proud to be delivering for the Australian people&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a female politician wearing a blazer talking in a chamber\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/e48672acbe2424903feef8332e0f8013.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Catherine King has previously described the project as &#8220;really significant&#8221;.\u00a0 (ABC News: Ian Cutmore)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Both Labor and the Coalition went into the 2013 federal election with $300 million pledges to kick-start Inland Rail, with the funding commitment ultimately coming from a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2013-08-29\/nrn-inland-rail-parkes\/4918918\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/4918918\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">victorious Abbott government.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2017, the Morrison government made a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/story-streams\/federal-budget-2017\/2017-05-09\/federal-budget-2017-what-it-means-for-regional-australia\/8486028\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/8486028\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$8.4 billion off-budget investment<\/a> in the government-owned Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) to deliver Inland Rail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms King said ARTC had seen &#8220;decades of underinvestment&#8221; by the former Coalition government.<\/p>\n<p>Project cost estimate triples<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms King said an independent assessment of Inland Rail conducted by ACIL Allen estimated the cost of delivering the project in full now exceeded $45 billion \u2014 more than three times the current budget allocation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The economic advisory firm&#8217;s assessment also found the project cannot be delivered until 2036, at the earliest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Three years ago, ARTC estimated the cost of the project had jumped to $31 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Experienced public service executive Kerry Schott cast doubt on ARTC&#8217;s cost estimate in her <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.infrastructure.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/independent-review-of-inland-rail-report.pdf]\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2023 independent review of Inland Rail<\/a>, saying it &#8220;should not be accepted by the shareholder&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Schott speaks behind a microphone, wearing small circular spectacles.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/971cf682c8184d52e9655ca26fb1b6a1.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Kerry Schott has previously raised concerns about the project&#8217;s scope and delivery costs.\u00a0 (ABC News: Matt Roberts)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There is insufficient certainty about the scope, the related schedule, and delivery costs to have any confidence in the numbers,&#8221; she wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the wake of Ms Schott&#8217;s 2023 review, retired corporate fundraiser and so-called father of Inland Rail, Everald Compton, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-05-03\/father-inland-rail-everald-compton-delays-blowouts-730\/102294532\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102294532\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called for a shorter freight line,<\/a> terminating at Toowoomba.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It will never get to Brisbane,&#8221; Inland Rail<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is unclear how many jobs will be impacted by the government&#8217;s decision to stop the line at Parkes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the revised direction of the project will be led by newly-appointed chair Collette Burke and chief executive Sean Sweeney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Burke most recently served as interim chair for Inland Rail, while Mr Sweeney comes from recent roles at MetroLink in Dublin, and City Rail Link in Auckland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms King said the appointments &#8220;reinforce&#8221;
