Richmond Road set for $70m upgrade

Early works will commence in Keswick later in July for an upgrade of the Richmond Rd, Railway Tce and Croydon Rd intersection, to improve travel between the city and South Rd.

The project, which will cost upwards of $70m and support 145 jobs, is jointly funded by the state and federal governments.

Key features of the upgrade include a widening of the intersection to accommodate new dedicated northbound right and left turn lanes onto Railway Tc, and two dedicated through lanes for travel in both directions.

It also includes widening Railway Tce with a dedicated eastbound left turn and westbound right turn lanes onto Richmond Rd, extended right turn slip lanes on Ashford and Hampton Rds, an extra westbound lane on Richmond Rd between Railway Tce and Keswick Creek to provide two lanes in each direction along the length of Richmond Road, and dedicated bicycle lanes on all approaches to the intersection and on Richmond Rd between Railway Tce and Anzac Highway.

Other improvements include traffic signals, LED road lighting, line marking and drainage, and new pedestrian crossings.

Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said the upgrades once completed would make it easier for western suburbs road users to get to and from the city.

“Anyone in the western suburbs knows that Richmond Road is a bottleneck,” he said.

“By widening Richmond Road and installing more through and turning lanes, road users will spend less time stuck in peak hour traffic and more time with their family and friends.

“We’ve already improved James Congdon Drive and removed the ridiculous dogleg along Grange Road.

“This upgrade is yet another exciting piece of the puzzle toward unlocking Adelaide’s road network along and around T2D.”

Acting Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Kristy McBain said: “As part of the broader T2D project, these works in Keswick will help ease congestion locally and improve connections between Adelaide’s western suburbs and the city”.

Main works on the project are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027 with completion expected by the end of 2028.

Mr Koutsantonis said there would be interruptions for regular road users while the work is undertaken.

“There’s going to be inconvenience and it’s going be difficult for communities and I think South Australians, I think they’re seeing the work that we’re doing on the North-South corridor, they’re seeing the interruptions that are occurring, there is some rat running occurring in side streets and that is a bit of pain for a lot of gain because once it’s completed the benefits will be extraordinary,” he said.

Early
