litres of fuel to arrive in Australia, fuel crisis relief, 55 ships on the way to Australia, Anthony Albanese announces fuel crisis relief

Australia’s fuel reserves are now at their highest levels since the start of the US-Iran war, but Anthony Albanese is warning the crisis is not yet over.

In the government’s weekly fuel update, the Prime Minister said 55 ships carrying a total of 3.2 billion litres of fuel were “locked in to be delivered over the next four weeks”.

“What that means is that we currently have six and a half billion litres of fuel in Australia in total across all fuel types, which continues to be more than we had at the start of this conflict,” he said on Saturday.

“This is the highest total amount of fuel in Australia since we introduced our fuel stockholdings, highest ever,” the Prime Minister said on Saturday.

“Australians can continue to have confidence in the work that the government has done to ensure that we have fuel security.”

But he warned the problems with fuel supply would continue as the US-Iran conflict remained.

“I’ll say again, we remain at level two so we ask Australians to just take what fuel you need, no more but no less also.”

The start of the US-Iran war in late February led to fuel supply issues and inflation worries in Australia.

Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz cut off about a fifth of the world’s oil supply, sending shockwaves down the supply chain, with Australians hit badly.

The Albanese government has since implemented a number of measures to shore up fuel supplies, including the adoption of a National Fuel Security Plan, temporary slashing of the fuel excise, expanded powers for the commonwealth to underwrite additional fuel cargoes, and relaxing of fuel standards.

Australia currently has 46 days worth of petrol, 39 days worth of diesel and 34 days of jet fuel.

So far in July, 47 ships carrying fuel arrived in Australia after 91 arrived in June.

“It is stating the obvious to say that we are not through all of this conflict yet, we will continue to monitor these issues and to be responsible,” Mr Albanese said.

The volatility of the war caused prices to erratically move up and down around the $US100 per barrel threshold for weeks.

This week, crude had its biggest single-day price jump since 2020 after US President Donald Trump announced he was reinstating the blockade on Iran.

Brent surged 9.6 per cent to $US83.30 a barrel.

The spike comes two weeks before the fuel tax is set to revert to 52.6 cent per litre after a temporary discount introduced in March.

Read related topics:<a class="topic_tag" href="https://www.news.com.au/topics/anthony-albanese"
