Australia\u2019s home affairs minister has angrily hit out at comments made by One Nation leader Pauline Hanson on a podcast with a British far right commentator.<\/p>\n
Appearing on a broadcast alongside the controversial Tommy Robinson, Senator Hanson appeared to blame migration issues on the abolition of the White Australia policy 50 years ago.<\/p>\n
Introduced after 1901, the measure restricted non-European immigration to the country and was torn up in 1973.<\/p>\n
During a press conference on Saturday morning to unveil the government\u2019s response to a report into Islamophobia, Mr Burke took aim at Senator Hanson\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n
\u201cI never thought when I entered parliament that in my political lifetime anyone who had been elected would be calling for White Australia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought we were in a country where everybody just accepted we had moved on and we were better because we had moved on.<\/p>\n
\u201cPart of saying you love Australia is to love Australia for who we are, not some perverted concept of a country where we would turn on each other, where Australians would basically lose capacity for kindness towards each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cYou will never find an orchestra where every instrument is the same.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the podcast with Mr Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, asked Senator Hanson about Australia\u2019s immigration issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow have you ended up with Pakistanis, Somalis, all of these African problems, with violent Africans. I\u2019ve seen some crazy videos come out of Australia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Senator Hanson replied: \u201cThey opened up and got rid of the white Australian policy then they started bringing in the different migrants.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had a lot of people come out after the Second World War. Italians, Germans, Polish, and these people, but they integrated into the system,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of them couldn\u2019t speak English, but they learnt to speak English. They had to work. These people who came in and really assimilated.\u201d<\/p>\n
Senator Hanson also suggested migrants were coming into the country \u201cpurely for the welfare system\u201d and that Australian Muslims were having children because they were taught \u201cAllah will provide\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, the Allah that is providing is the taxpayer,\u201d she added<\/p>\n
Anthony Albanese told the same press conference that Islamophobia was on the rise and that it had \u201cno place in Australia\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cHate directed at one community hurts us all,\u201d the Prime Minister said. <\/p>\n
\u201cDiversity is one of Australia\u2019s great strengths and we wont as a nation let hate divide us.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery Australian has the right to feel safe, valued and respected for the contributions they make to our great nation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The government response came to a report from Islamophobia special envoy Aftab Malik, who outlined the challenges Australian Muslims face against a backdrop of rising Islamophobia.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor Muslim Australians who continue to experience Islamophobia in their daily lives, this has been a long wait,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is just the start of the journey. To tackle Islamophobia at its roots we must address the challenging questions.\u201d<\/p>\n
