A man has died in his car after leading police on a wild pursuit from Queensland into NSW, sparking a critical incident investigation.<\/p>\n

The man, believed to have been armed with a gun, first drew police attention at Robina on the Gold Coast shortly before midnight on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Queensland police tried to detain him when they spotted his vehicle on West Burleigh Rd, but he evaded officers and took off towards the Gold Coast Highway.<\/p>\n

NSW officers received reports that the man had driven across the border at about 1am on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Police tracked down the man\u2019s Ford utility on Sexton Hill Drive at Banora Point, giving chase when he failed to stop as directed.<\/p>\n

Officers pursued the man through several nearby suburbs and deployed road spikes twice at South Murwillumbah, with the driver continuing for almost 26km before finally coming to a stop at an embankment on Kyogle Rd, Kunghur.<\/p>\n

Police surrounded the Ford and negotiators were brought on scene to speak to the man.<\/p>\n

However as officers approached the vehicle, they found the man unconscious inside.<\/p>\n

He was unable to be revived and died at the scene.<\/p>\n

Police say he is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be a 25-year-old man from Queensland.<\/p>\n

A firearm was seized from the man\u2019s vehicle for forensic examination.<\/p>\n

\u201cA critical incident team from Richmond Police District will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and a report will be prepared for the information of the NSW Coroner,\u201d NSW Police said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Their investigation will be subject to an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.<\/p>\n

Investigations are ongoing.<\/p>\n
