A driver who alleges he was assaulted while making a delivery says the alleged incident was not taken seriously by SA Police, who told him the case had been closed.<\/p>\n

Chinese national Chao Wu spoke to ABC News through an interpreter and said he was attacked while trying to make a delivery in Adelaide’s CBD on April 1.<\/p>\n

“He rushed from the warehouse to the door and attacked me \u2026 and then he held a stick and said that he wanted to kill me, and then I was injured in many places,” Mr Wu said.<\/p>\n

“I felt that my head and chest were hit hard, and then I fell to the ground, and then what happened was \u2026 that I felt beaten all over my body and strangled.”<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old father, who has been in Australia since 2023, said police were called straight after the incident and attended the scene, leading him to believe an investigation would begin.<\/p>\n

Mr Wu said after being treated in hospital for his injuries he went to the Norwood Police Station the next day to give a written statement as he was concerned about the potential language barriers in sharing his allegations.<\/p>\n

He said police told him the matter had been closed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Frustrated, he went to Grenfell Street police station in the city in a further attempt to have the incident looked at.<\/p>\n

“I was very disappointed with the police’s handling at that time, I thought that was why I needed to look for evidence, I think the investigation should be a matter for the police, not a matter for \u2026 victims,” Mr Wu said.<\/p>\n

Mr Wu said he then made an on online complaint about the matter and his friends began sharing the story on Chinese social media.<\/p>\n

Migrant advocate assisted driver to make further report<\/p>\n

Say Kapsis, who runs Fair Go SA, a volunteer migrant advocacy group, said she was then told about Mr Wu’s case and accompanied him to Sturt Police station on April 6.<\/p>\n

“His story became very popular in the Chinese community, and we were amazed that in 2026 [this] kind of thing still happens,” Ms Kapsis said.<\/p>\n

Ms Kapsis said she and Mr Wu were told that the case had been dealt with.<\/p>\n

“The police officer [looked] confused and said, ‘it’s case closed’, you know, like, ‘what do you want?'” Ms Kapsis said.<\/p>\n

“And then I was like ‘no, it’s not case closed’.<\/p>\n

“I questioned the police officer and the police officer said that the case had been closed and concluded as a mutual fight.<\/p>\n

“I told the police: ‘I’m not going anywhere unless you take \u2026 the victim’s affidavit’.”Incident now ‘under investigation’<\/p>\n

Mr Wu later made a complaint to SAPOL about the handling of the incident.<\/p>\n

“I am very angry, I \u2026 cannot be treated with fairness and justice,” Mr Wu said.<\/p>\n

In response to Mr Wu’s online complaint, SA Police told Mr Wu in a message, “it was determined nil offences were committed and it was deemed an accident”.<\/p>\n

But after questions from ABC News, SA Police said the incident was now under investigation.<\/p>\n

“Police are investigating an alleged assault in Norman Street, Adelaide on 1 April,” the statement said.<\/p>\n

“As the matter is under investigation, we will not be providing any further details.<\/p>\n

“Police do not have any record of a complaint made by Mr Wu but will be in contact with him and endeavour to resolve any issues.<\/p>\n

“SAPOL is committed to delivering a high standard of service to all community members, regardless of their language or cultural background.”<\/p>\n

Ms Kapsis said Mr Wu’s case was not isolated and she had dealt with several other people who had alleged similar experiences with SAPOL not taking reports seriously.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“That’s not how we expect South Australian police \u2026 (to) behave,” Ms Kapsis said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“When the people are vulnerable, they’re seeking help from you and that’s how South Australian police treat you.”<\/p>\n

Ms Kapsis said an interpreter should be called to help police when there was a language barrier.<\/p>\n

“I think \u2026 (with) South Australian police \u2026 there’s systemic issues \u2026 they really need more cultural training,” Ms Kapsis said.<\/p>\n

“There are a few contributing (factors) to such behaviours \u2026 one is the language barrier, communications issues, cultural understanding as well.”<\/p>\n

Mr Wu said he was now considering whether he and his family had a future in Australia.<\/p>\n
