Shadow housing minister Andrew Bragg\u00a0has broken ranks with Liberal Party federal president Tony Abbott over multiculturalism having \u201cfailed\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Senator Bragg was asked on ABC Insiders whether he agreed with the former prime minister\u2019s \u201cpretty inflammatory video\u201d he posted to social media last week.<\/p>\n

In the video, Mr Abbott insisted there were immigrants who had arrived in Australia who did not share the values enshrined in the citizenship oath.<\/p>\n

The former prime minister also said that aspects of Islam were incompatible with liberal democracies, singling out the Bondi gunmen who \u201cthought so little of our traditional commitment to freedom of religion\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlainly, multiculturalism has failed and diversity is not our strength when two individuals have so rejected our national ideals,\u201d Mr Abbott said.<\/p>\n

Mr Bragg told the ABC that liberalism had \u201cactually created multiculturalism\u201d and that he did not agree with Mr Abbott.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u00a0don’t agree with that. I make the\u00a0point that liberalism has actually\u00a0created multiculturalism, because it\u00a0creates a framework for people to\u00a0have freedom of religion, freedom of\u00a0thought, freedom of conscience,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Liberal Party built modern\u00a0Australia. If you look at the\u00a0Menzies government opening up after\u00a0the war, the Holt government\u00a0abolishing parts of the White\u00a0Australia policy and then Malcolm Fraser’s actions to promote\u00a0multiculturalism and introduce\u00a0things like the SBS.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a very\u00a0proud record to stand on, and it’s\u00a0very important we’re clear about\u00a0that.\u201d<\/p>\n

ABC host Patricia Karvelas asked Mr Bragg if he would like the Liberal Party president to \u201cstop saying these things\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, I\u2019m not his spokesperson,\u201d Mr Bragg said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe’s a former prime minister, he’s entitled to his views. I strongly disagree with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the growing threat of terrorism and the prevalence of forced marriages, which the ABC has linked to climate change<\/a>, Mr Bragg said it was not due to multiculturalism.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, they’re very\u00a0different things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe great thing\u00a0about multiculturalism is that you\u00a0can subscribe to the Australian\u00a0nation, its laws and its culture,\u00a0but you can engage in cultural\u00a0practices as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is not\u00a0a reflection or in no way similar to\u00a0the issues flagged, which are very\u00a0serious issues, around where certain\u00a0parts of the community have engaged\u00a0in violence against other parts of\u00a0the community, or have sought to do\u00a0things that are illegal, such as\u00a0forced marriages.\u201d<\/p>\n

It came after One Nation leader Pauline Hanson rejected claims she supports the White Australia policy<\/a>, saying she has \u201cnever ever\u201d advocated for it.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0The Guardian<\/a>\u00a0both wrote that Ms Hanson had “lamented” the end of the White Australia policy.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know those two leftist organisations that want to try and destroy myself and One Nation and discredit me?\u201d Ms Hanson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re false allegations that I wanted to introduce the White Australia policy. Not the case. Never, ever have I advocated that, and I don\u2019t believe in it as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
