Crossing hero saves toddler from traffic with walking cane

A woman has used her walking cane to save a young boy from being skittled by cars after stopping him from crossing into oncoming traffic in Melbourne’s southwest.

Rebecca Cooper was on her way to buy a lottery ticket on Morris Rd in Hoppers Crossing when a young child came hurdling around the corner.

Dashcam footage showed the child running around the corner of a street and towards the oncoming traffic.

“Why is there a small child?” the driver asked.

“Wait, stop, stop stop,” Ms Cooper could be heard as she opened the car door.

Ms Coopers, who lives with Multiple sclerosis (MS) and Crohn’s disease, relies on a walking stick and was unable to run out of the car.

Instead, she used her cane to stop the child in his tracks before scooping him up in her arms.

“He was so fast, he had that run, like he was forward-facing and he was just off,” she told 7News.

“I couldn’t run because I have a walking stick, so I got out (of the car) and I just then just grabbed my walking stick and used it to pull the poor little kid in.”

She said while she usually “hates” using her walking stick, “it came in handy”.

The young boy’s mother barrelled behind the runaway child shortly later, grabbing her son to safety.

Ms Cooper said the incident unfolded so quick the mum didn’t have a chance to say thank you.

“She was pretty distraught,” Ms Cooper said.

“I think she was just thinking ‘I’ve got my child back’ because she really grabbed him.”

A woman has used her walking cane to save a young boy from being skittled by cars
