{"id":54182,"date":"2026-07-20T05:23:21","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T05:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/54182\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T05:23:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T05:23:21","slug":"brisbane-2032-venue-capacity-could-be-expanded-to-cover-escalating-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/54182\/","title":{"rendered":"Brisbane 2032 venue capacity could be expanded to cover escalating costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Operational costs are expected to increase as a result of the decentralised nature of Brisbane\u2019s 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>While the operational bill will be funded by the International Olympic Committee, sponsorship and ticket sales, Queensland taxpayers are on the hook for any shortfall. <\/p>\n<p>Sport Minister Tim Mander, who returned to his role on Thursday, acknowledged the government still didn\u2019t know how much the Brisbane 2032 Games would cost to run \u2013 partly due to uncertainty about what sports would be included. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a little bit flexible at the moment,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we go forward and as things become more concrete, we\u2019ll know the actual cost and then we adjust accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019ve got to raise more money, if we\u2019ve got to generate more ticket sales, we (will) look at other revenue-raising opportunities to meet whatever cost it might be. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are making sure \u2026 is that it doesn\u2019t cost taxpayers any money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris has previously said the $4.9bn cost announced in 2021 \u201cbears no resemblance\u201d to the actual cost. <\/p>\n<p>Mr Mander said the government would not wind back its plans for regional Queensland to host Olympic and Paralympic events. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to make it work and there\u2019s a lot of work to be done, but it\u2019s going to work,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>The size of Games venues will determine how much revenue is earned from ticket sales. <\/p>\n<p>Some people familiar with Brisbane\u2019s Games planning argue Rockhampton\u2019s Fitzroy River rowing venue will struggle to facilitate a significant number of spectators.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mander said the spectator capacity for Rockhampton\u2019s venue would be part of the site evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the IOC could offer a reprieve to under-threat sports for the Brisbane 2032 Games. <\/p>\n<p>The IOC is tipped to trim the number of sports included in its core Olympic program.<\/p>\n<p>Fears canoe slalom would be axed \u2013 despite the state planning a $250m Redlands whitewater centre \u2013 prompted speculation Brisbane would need to choose it as one of its four discretionary picks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur discussions with the IOC is that they will fully respect the information that we\u2019ve been using to decide the sports, and so it could be a situation \u2013 speculating \u2013 where a sport might be eliminated for the future, but not for our Games,\u201d Mr Mander revealed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe discussions I know that Andrew\u2019s had with the IOC are very much around \u2026 we want to make sure that our plans aren\u2019t jeopardised in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BUDGETS EXPLAINED <\/p>\n<p>Infrastructure: Split between the state and federal governments, $7.1bn will be spent building new venues and upgrading existing ones. The flagship venue will be the $3.8bn Brisbane Stadium at Victoria Park.<\/p>\n<p>Operational: The $4.9bn cost of building temporary venues and putting on the Games \u2013 such as installing fencing, running athletes\u2019 transport and security services. It will be funded by the International Olympic Committee, tickets sales and sponsorship. Any shortfall will be funded by the Queensland taxpayer and 2032 President Andrew Liveris has already foreshadowed an increase. <\/p>\n<p>Athletes villages: $3.5bn is allocated to build four athletes villages in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Rockhampton. About 10,500 athletes will compete in 2032. <\/p>\n<p>Other: Infrastructure around venues, such as pathways, bus stations, and road upgrades will be funded separately. This is likely to be paid for by state and local governments under the guise of legacy projects. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Operational costs are expected to increase as a
