{"id":54320,"date":"2026-07-20T07:48:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T07:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/54320\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T07:48:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T07:48:16","slug":"lgbtqia-nightclubs-lease-at-former-sydney-church-terminated-due-to-offensive-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/54320\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBTQIA+ nightclub&#8217;s lease at former Sydney church terminated due to &#8216;offensive trade&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The owners of a deconsecrated church in Sydney&#8217;s CBD have terminated the lease of an LGBTQIA+ pop-up club, claiming the venue had been used for &#8220;offensive trade&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Organisers of Divine Playhouse were served with a breach notice earlier this month, in the wake of complaints from some members of the Christian community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On Monday, organisers confirmed they had been told to vacate the premises on Kent Street within three days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a statement, Divine Playhouse and Heaps Gay founder Kat Dopper said she was &#8220;devastated&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Divine Playhouse was created as a critical new cultural home for diverse artists and communities from all over Sydney and New South Wales,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s sitting empty \u2014 no artists, no audiences, the joy and community we built in that room, silenced.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An image of two women standing at microphone stands.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784533694_555_d4226e5524d8696eadce2dc85285a236.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ms Dopper says she is devastated by the decision. (Supplied: Anna Hay)<\/p>\n<p>Protests at opening night<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 158-year-old church building was deconsecrated in 1932 and has operated as a theatre for the past 70 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The venue was then leased by developer Revelop to Heaps Gay, a nightlife group that hosts parties and other events for Sydney&#8217;s LGBTQIA+ community and allies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But its new tenants faced backlash from some Christian groups, who claimed their choice of venue &#8220;mocks religious faith&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Earlier this month, about 70 protesters gathered outside Divine Playhouse to rally against its opening night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Lawyers for the building&#8217;s owners then issued a breach notice to Heaps Gay Events, which holds the lease for the venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The notice, seen by the ABC, said the tenants had carried on an &#8220;offensive&#8221; trade that had caused &#8220;grievance and disturbance to owners of adjoining properties and to the general public&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Divine Playhouse former Catholic Church Sydney\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6c93cc997ceaa1f6f3986ef44a315c7c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The church was deconsecrated in 1932. (ABC News: Floss Adams)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The lawyers also noted the &#8220;significant protest and public criticism&#8221; directed at the venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It prompted Divine Playhouse to close and all events at the venue to be cancelled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The ABC has contacted Revelop for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Heaps Gay said it had now been officially asked to leave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The termination came with no conversation and no good-faith engagement \u2014 just legal letters and a deadline to strip out months of work,&#8221; the statement read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The ABC understands Heaps Gay is considering a legal challenge against the owners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We believe this termination was unlawful and unjust,&#8221; Ms Dopper said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If a landlord&#8217;s personal beliefs can shut down an arts venue, no stage in this country is safe. Who decides what art is acceptable?
