(Supplied: Queensland government)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tucked away between the glossy pages is <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.delivering2032.com.au\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0013\/105061\/Queensland_Government-2032_Delivery_Plan.pdf\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a timeline<\/a> that shows the moment Brisbane&#8217;s bid to host was successful to today, and that spans most of the graph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The remaining distance, outlining what&#8217;s to come before the opening ceremony, is short and devoid of detail, betraying just how many hurdles lie ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Not captured is the construction of seven new sporting venues and upgrades to 10 more, within a $7.1 billion budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This comes at a time when the construction labour force is undersized, material costs are soaring, and fuel security is tenuous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The government promises everything will be delivered on time and under budget but according to industry experts, that will require a strong relationship with the construction sector, which has splintered after recent stoushes with unions over industrial codes.<\/p>\n<p>A COVID-era ray of hope<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2021, people flocked to live sites across the state in their thousands and erupted in cheers when the rights were confirmed, and fireworks lit up the sky.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A crowd stands on the banks of the Brisbane River as fireworks go off.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bd68afdfc545c62bbefcd960d5158630.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Crowds gathered across Brisbane for the announcement of the successful bidder for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. And a stadium debacle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When Brisbane was first announced as host, the Gabba stadium was hand-picked as the crown jewel <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-07-22\/qld-brisbane-olympic-infrastructure-2032-games\/100311674\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100311674\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">location for the athletics and the opening and closing ceremonies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The home of AFL and cricket was set to get a $1 billion rebuild, which would have increased its capacity to 50,000 and required the demolition of the adjoining East Brisbane State School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The estimated price tag for the Gabba rebuild <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-02-17\/gabba-stadium-redevelopment-funding-2032-olympics-infrastructure\/101988206\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/101988206\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blew out to $2.7 billion,<\/a> and the school community fought to stay.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"an image of students frowning holding up placards in front of their school\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/26c4b048d080f84154d6aac4e19d1330.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">East Brisbane State School students and families rallied against plans to demolish and expand the neighbouring Gabba stadium. (Supplied: Dane Beesley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After a Labor leadership change, Steven Miles announced a review, led by former Brisbane lord mayor Graham Quirk, which recommended a new stadium be built at Victoria Park instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Both the LNP and Labor rejected the proposition of a new stadium, and Mr Miles announced Lang Park would host the opening and closing ceremonies, while the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC) would host the athletics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After winning the state election seven months later, newly elected Premier David Crisafulli announced a 100-day review into infrastructure for the Games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Its return in March last year marked the government&#8217;s official stadium U-turn, with the premier conceding he had broken an election promise of &#8220;no new stadiums&#8221; Mr Crisafulli said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s my decision, and I accept that decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It prompted outrage among some First Nations groups, who have said the site is of deep cultural significance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In May, protests at the site escalated, leading to the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-29\/police-deployed-victoria-park-olympic-stadium\/106736562\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106736562\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrest of five people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On June 1, excavators moved in with the site becoming the first to be handed over to the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA).<\/p>\n<p>The state of play<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Seven new venues will be built for the Games, while 10 will be upgraded to be ready for the Games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Of the seven new builds, only Brisbane Stadium at Victoria Park has progressed to the early works stage, while the remainder are in the planning and approvals or the design phase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">None of the venue upgrades have progressed to the early works phase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Games will extend beyond the south-east with multiple events to be held in regional Queensland, including equestrian in Toowoomba, football in Cairns and sailing in Townsville and the Whitsundays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Rockhampton&#8217;s Fitzroy River is set to host the rowing and canoe sprint events, but its <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-10\/rockhampton-hosting-2032-brisbane-olympic-rowing-canoeing\/106325194\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106325194\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suitability has been questioned.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The central Queensland venue has <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-25\/world-rowing-back-fitzroy-river-olympic-rowing-venue\/106495440\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106495440\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">received the backing of key officials<\/a> and the government has defended its decision, reiterating that there is &#8220;no reason&#8221; the audit report stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Colacino said this could mean a price hike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What we see at the moment in Brisbane is the Olympics coinciding with major investments in health infrastructure [and transport] \u2026 so we&#8217;re seeing the Olympics being delivered at a time where we can expect to see a squeeze on labour force,&#8221; on falling within the $7.1 billion budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are strategically doing it, we are methodically doing it, we are calmly doing it, and we are making sure it is on budget,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We said go back to the drawing board, do it within budget.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When asked whether he was confident the Games would be run to budget, Olympics Minister Tim Mander said the &#8220;actual cost&#8221; would be clearer as things became &#8220;more concrete&#8221;, and the government would &#8220;adjust accordingly&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It means if we have got to raise more money, if we have got to generate more ticket sales, we look at other revenue-raising opportunities to meet whatever cost it might be,&#8221;
