{"id":5580,"date":"2026-05-06T04:42:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T04:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/5580\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T04:42:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T04:42:10","slug":"afp-warn-of-arrests-on-arrival-for-isis-linked-families-after-australia-flights-booked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/5580\/","title":{"rendered":"AFP warn of arrests on arrival for ISIS-linked families after Australia flights booked"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Flights have been booked for families linked to Islamic State fighters returning from Syria to Australia, with women in the group facing arrest and investigation after they arrive back in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The group of four women, along with nine children and grandchildren, left Syria&#8217;s Al Roj refugee camp in late April, but their path from Syria to Australia has remained uncertain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The members of the so-called ISIS-bride cohort will arrive in Australia on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">They are all Australian citizens and hold Australian passports.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-24\/australian-isis-brides-syria-refugee-camp-attempt-to-leave-again\/106604896\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian &#8216;ISIS brides&#8217; leave camp in Syria<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A group of Australian families with ties to former Islamic State fighters have begun another attempt to travel home to Australia after spending years stranded in a Syrian refugee camp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said he was alerted as soon as the group booked tickets for flights to Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That was provided to us this morning, and we made it public this morning,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The situation from the moment the individuals left the camp was obviously \u2014 it was clear they would be trying to leave Damascus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett said police were waiting for the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Some individuals will be arrested and charged,&#8221; Commissioner Barrett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Some will face continued investigations when they arrive in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And children who return in the cohort will be asked to undergo community integration programs, therapeutic support, and countering violent extremist programs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One of the women and a child from the group are expected to end up in New South Wales, with the state&#8217;s police minister, Yasmin Cately, confirming that officers were preparing for the pair&#8217;s arrival.<\/p>\n<p>Terrorism, slave trading charges flagged<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Commissioner Barrett said Australian law enforcement agencies have been investigating and gathering evidence on the so-called ISIS-bride cohort, including this smaller group, for a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That included travelling to Syria, &#8220;at a time when Syria was a war zone, with no functioning government&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That evidence and information were to determine whether Australians who travelled to Syria may have committed Commonwealth offences, including terrorism offences, such as entering or remaining in a declared area,&#8221;  Commissioner Barrett said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The AFP boss made an assurance that updates on any arrests and charges would be provided where and when possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Australians need to know that law enforcement and security agencies are doing everything they can to keep them safe,&#8221; the commissioner said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She confirmed plans were in place, and investigations were ongoing, in case more members of the bigger ISIS-bride cohort made plans to return to Australia, the AFP was prepared, Commissioner Barrett said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Group facing ASIO attention<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After leaving the refugee camp last month, the families had remained in Damascus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last week, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-01\/australia-has-no-legal-way-to-block-isis-brides-law-expert-says\/106629468\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106629468\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Syrian government said the group was prevented from reaching Damascus airport because &#8220;the Australian government had refused to receive them&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australia&#8217;s position has not changed, Mr Burke said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">ASIO chief Mike Burgess has said the spy agency has assessed the group and shared that intelligence with police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Our job is to identify and understand the risks of returning individuals. We have done that,&#8221; director-general Mike Burgess said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Our government understands our assessed risk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He declined to identify what further steps ASIO would take.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not concerned immediately by their return, but they will get our attention,&#8221;  the ASIO boss said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This latest effort by the group of 13 to return to Australia follows a failed attempt by a larger cohort in February<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-16\/australian-families-with-isis-links-leave-camp-in-syria\/106351298\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106351298\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Not repatriating&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Albanese government has repeatedly said Australia would offer no assistance to help the group return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The government is not repatriating and will not repatriate, the government is not assisting and will not assist these individuals,&#8221; Mr Burke said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Burke slammed the adults in the group, who, he said, had put children in an unspeakable situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They made an appalling, disgraceful decision,&#8221; Mr Burke said of the original decision of the women to travel to Syria.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tony Burke at press conference\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/8b7bc479d56b96e083cdc17d002f8d00.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke says the Australian government was notified of the groups&#8217; travel plans when their tickets were booked.\u00a0 (ABC News: Ian Cutmore)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If any of these individuals find their way back to Australia, if they have committed crimes, they can expect to face the full force of the law.
