But I&#8217;m not going to get into a debate about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms O\u2019Neil did not confirm whether the Albanese government would rule out a change to the flag, saying it had \u201cnever been contemplated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers and members of the Labor Party will <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/labors-national-executive-goes-uncontested-ahead-of-major-policy-platform-showdown-at-national-conference-in-adelaide\/news-story\/6099516eafe3c0e23a30525a9f323a30\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"6099516eafe3c0e23a30525a9f323a30\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">debate reforms to their policy platform from Thursday to Saturday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/australian-manufacturing-workers-union-calls-for-union-jack-to-be-stripped-from-flag-ahead-of-labor-national-conference\/news-story\/cb98ab3b1d8984baba6024981ce2435b\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"cb98ab3b1d8984baba6024981ce2435b\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">ambiguity comes after a\u00a0major trade union called for the government to remove\u00a0the Union\u00a0Jack<\/a> from the flag.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Manufacturing Workers&#8217; Union (AMWU) released its action &#8220;blueprint&#8221; ahead of Labor&#8217;s\u00a0National Conference in Adelaide starting on Thursday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One section of the &#8220;working-class\u00a0agenda&#8221;\u00a0called\u00a0for the removal of &#8220;symbols of oppression&#8221; to advance solidarity with Indigenous people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to strip away the constant reminders of the old ruling class and colonial empire,&#8221; the document\u00a0read.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Symbols of oppression, like the Union Jack on our flag and offensive colonial statues, must be removed from public life.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The workers&#8217; union advocated against public celebrations of symbols linked to Indigenous dispossession.<\/p>\n<p>The AMWU believed &#8220;working class people today did not commit these colonial crimes&#8221; but have &#8220;inherited the system that emerged from them&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A system that\u00a0favours\u00a0the rich and powerful.
