One section of the “working-class\u00a0agenda”\u00a0called\u00a0for the removal of “symbols of oppression” to advance solidarity with Indigenous people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We need to strip away the constant reminders of the old ruling class and colonial empire,” the document\u00a0read.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Symbols of oppression, like the Union Jack on our flag and offensive colonial statues, must be removed from public life.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The workers’ union advocated against public celebrations of symbols linked to Indigenous dispossession.<\/p>\n
The AMWU believed “working class people today did not commit these colonial crimes” but have “inherited the system that emerged from them”.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
“A system that\u00a0favours\u00a0the rich and powerful. We therefore\u00a0inherit\u00a0the obligation to fix its biggest wrongs,” it continued.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
