river taxis, Green Grid: Council’s 2032 Olympics vision

Uber-style water taxis would be ferrying passengers along the Brisbane River by the time the 2032 cauldron is lit, under a bold vision to transform the Olympic and Paralympic city.

Brisbane City’s Council’s Legacy Plan will be unveiled today underpinned by a flagship partnerships program, giving local businesses and community organisations a clearer pathway to propose and progress major and joint venture projects before 2032.

The Legacy Plan supports opening up mothballed pontoons to on-demand river taxis to ferry residents and visitors to key precincts and suburbs up and downstream.

Other endorsed initiatives include the “Green and Gold Grid” of pathways connecting key venues and inner-city destinations; a global food hall to showcase SEQ produce and culinary talent; the Mt Coot-tha transformation anchored by the multi-day 52km Great Brisbane Wilderness Trail, more public art light projections, suburban park upgrades and “The Low Line” between Aria’s Fish Lane and West End under the South Brisbane rail line.

“The Low Line demonstrates the potential for under-utilised urban spaces to be reimagined with the community in mind and reflecting the best of subtropical design,” Aria Commercial Manager Michael Zaicek said of its inclusion in the Legacy Plan.

To enhance the Olympics and Paralympics when they are on, the plan also includes suburban live sites, a volunteering passport to help fast-track local volunteers into Games-time roles and opening a dedicated Pride House venue for LGBTIQ+ athletes, fans, and allies.

Brisbane City Council also plans to continue lobbying the International Olympic Committee and Brisbane 2032 organisers to establish a Legacy Fund — as has occurred with the LA 2028 — to pay for future projects.

The Legacy blueprint was developed following the Making Our Mark consultation program, which involved more than 2000 ideas and attracted almost 20,000 votes.

“We’ve developed a Legacy Plan that puts Brisbane residents first and makes sure the work we do creates lasting benefits for our city and suburbs,” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.

“From better transport and parks to more homes in the right places and more to see and do, we’re making sure the benefits last long after 2032.

“Governments can’t build great cities alone, which is why we’re making it easier for businesses and community organisations to help shape Brisbane’s future.”

Cr Schrinner said not every idea would happen overnight, but the plan outlined clear priorities for the years leading up to 2032 and beyond.

“We’ve seen what strong partnerships can achieve at Howard Smith Wharves and Fish Lane, and we want to encourage more projects that make Brisbane an even better place to live,” he said.

“Our plan is about building a better Brisbane for the people who call our city home, with a legacy that will benefit future generations long after the Closing Ceremony.”

Luke Fraser, chief executive of Howard Smith Wharves, which is embarking on a $500m redevelopment of its popular riverside precinct, said bold vision to build the Brisbane of the future would help the city become even more special.

“I know how passionate and innovative our private sector is here in Brisbane, and they are ready to create the spaces and places that will take Brisbane to the next level,” he said.

Committee For Brisbane President Jen Williams said the Making our Mark campaign helped shape the citywide vision through genuine consultation, and it could now only be brought to life through collaboration.

“The Brisbane Legacy Plan paints a picture of an authentic, modern city – one that is confident in its identity and its future on the global stage,” she said.

“The Plan reflects the qualities that make Brisbane distinctive, recognising our welcoming, outdoors lifestyle while continuing to strengthen the places, infrastructure and experiences that support a thriving city.”

Property Council Queensland executive director Jess Caire said delivering a lasting legacy through the partnerships programs would require strong co-operation between government, industry and the community.

“The Property Council looks forward to continuing to engage with Council as the program is developed and helping shape a partnership framework that unlocks the expertise, investment and innovation of the property industry to deliver the homes, precincts, public spaces and city-shaping projects that will leave a lasting mark on Brisbane long after the Games have ended,” she said.

“The homes, public spaces, connections and community assets we create over the next six years will be the legacy future generations of Brisbane residents experience every day.”

THE 21 EARLY LEGACY INITIATIVES

TARGETED COMMUNITY, CULTURAL, & ACTIVATION INITIATIVES

Global Food
