A Sydney doctor\u2019s long-running mission to strengthen\u00a0Catholic healthcare in Zambia\u00a0has reached another milestone, with two more shipping containers of Australian medical equipment and supplies arriving to support hospitals, healthcare\u00a0workers\u00a0and medical education.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr Mark Hanley, a GP and senior lecturer in the School of Medicine at the University of Notre Dame Australia, recently returned from\u00a0 Zambia after overseeing the delivery of the fifth and sixth containers of donations through his partnership with the Archdiocese of Chipata and Sr Astridah Chibale OP, who holds a doctorate in public health and coordinates hospitals across the nation\u2019s Catholic healthcare network.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Packed by 10 volunteer medical students from the university, the latest shipments included medical equipment, teaching resources and more than 450 cartons of personal protective equipment destined for Zambia Catholic University (ZCU) in the country\u2019s Copperbelt region.\u00a0The university hopes to\u00a0establish\u00a0a Catholic medical school in the future. In the meantime, the protective equipment is being distributed through\u00a0a\u00a0network of 68 Catholic hospitals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The supplies will assist healthcare workers as they undertake training to prepare for any potential spread of Ebola from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.\u00a0The latest delivery builds on years of Australian support for Catholic healthcare in Zambia,\u00a0with\u00a0Calvary Health\u00a0Care\u00a0network\u00a0and St Kevin\u2019s Parish in Eastwood\u00a0as well as UNDA\u00a0assisting\u00a0Dr Hanly\u2019s efforts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Three earlier containers sent to St Joseph\u2019s Nursing School in rural Zambia have helped transform the institution into one of the country\u2019s leading nursing colleges. Dr Hanley says the school now ranks 10th among Zambia\u2019s 134 nursing training institutions, attracting students from every province and housing one of the nation\u2019s most comprehensive nursing reference libraries.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Nearby, the 400-bed St Joseph\u2019s Hospital, which is run by the Sisters of Our Lady of Kilimanjaro, continues to serve a population of around 500,000 people. Patients travel up to 100 kilometres to access the hospital\u2019s Australian-donated digital X-ray machine. Dr\u00a0Hanley\u00a0said the continuing partnership\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0the long-term impact Australian Catholics can have by supporting the\u00a0church\u2019s healthcare mission.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the rural areas,\u00a0in particular, the people have\u00a0nothing\u00a0but the Christian faith is very strong,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are appreciative of\u00a0whatever we can do to help them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cCalvary Health Care, for example,\u00a0donated 100 Australian-made bed frames that were only a few years old. Here in a such wealthy country,\u00a0they were destined for scrap metal, but\u00a0in Zambia they\u00a0will make a world of difference for\u00a0communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople will travel a long way if it means their\u00a0elderly\u00a0relative will now\u00a0be able to die\u00a0cared for\u00a0in\u00a0a comfortable bed, or\u00a0there\u2019ll\u00a0be a bed available for\u00a0a young woman\u00a0to\u00a0recover from giving birth.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSimilarly, with the medical resource library donated by UNDA,\u00a0at some point Zambia\u2019s health care systems will go digital, but in the meantime those\u00a0medical\u00a0text books\u00a0are supporting education there and literally changing lives.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Two more shipping containers of Australian medical equipment and supplies have arrived to support hospitals in Zambia.
