Pauline Hanson has defended her controversial comments about domestic violence, saying she doesn\u2019t want the nation to \u201cget it twisted\u201d. <\/p>\n
The One Nation leader took to Elon Musk\u2019s platform X to share \u201cexactly\u201d what she said in the 4BC interview. <\/p>\n
\u201cHere\u2019s exactly what I said on 4BC about domestic violence so you don\u2019t get it twisted by the media or the Labor Party,\u201d she wrote. <\/p>\n
Senator Hanson was swiftly slammed for victim-blaming after she said domestic violence was a \u201ctwo-way street\u201d. <\/p>\n
When asked to condemn male perpetrators of domestic violence, she said \u201cwomen can also lose their cool\u201d. <\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone is under so much pressure and it\u2019s really hard. I don\u2019t think we communicate enough with each other,\u201d Senator Hanson told 4BC on Wednesday. <\/p>\n
\u201cDomestic violence is wrong, but it\u2019s also a two-way street.\u201d <\/p>\n
Anti-domestic violence campaigners condemned Senator Hanson for victim-blaming and ignoring the difficulty reality of leaving an abusive partner. <\/p>\n
\u201cDomestic violence is a scourge, but sometimes, look, I\u2019m not going to go in detail, but I\u2019ve been through it myself in my life, and I just feel that if you\u2019re not in a house where you feel safe, you feel you don\u2019t want to be there, then you shouldn\u2019t put up with it,\u201d Senator Hanson said.<\/p>\n
Advocates warned the most likely time for a domestic violence victim to be killed was when they left an abusive partner. <\/p>\n
Labor Minister for Education Jason Clare joined the growing group of voices criticising Senator Hanson\u2019s comments. <\/p>\n
\u201cOne in four Australian women are victims of domestic violence \u2026 that\u2019s one in four women who are violently attacked by people who tell them that they love them. You know, that\u2019s not a two-way street. That\u2019s a crime,\u201d he told the ABC.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think when people hear these comments, if they\u2019re thinking about voting for Pauline Hanson, they think, hang on. I didn\u2019t sign up for that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Opposition home affairs spokesman Jonathon Duniam said Senator Hanson\u2019s comments were a \u201cgarbled response\u201d. <\/p>\n
\u201cIf we\u2019re serious about resolving matters of domestic violence, elder abuse, child sexual abuse, and exploitation, then let\u2019s not just have throwaway lines in interviews,\u201d he told the ABC. <\/p>\n
\u201cI think One Nation have been long on the record as suggesting that not only women are victims, although that does ignore the fact that the statistics bear out the overwhelming majority of victims of domestic violence are women, perpetrated by men, often partners known to them.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think community and political leaders need to be very careful about how they speak about these issues.\u201d <\/p>\n
Senator Duniam said politicians needed to \u201cbe real about looking at ways to help victims and to ensure perpetrators stop what they\u2019re doing\u201d. <\/p>\n
The comments came after two women and two girls were allegedly murdered within four days in early July. <\/p>\n
