{"id":56619,"date":"2026-07-23T05:03:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T05:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/56619\/"},"modified":"2026-07-23T05:03:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T05:03:10","slug":"chalmers-cannot-rule-out-gas-tax-fight-at-labor-conference-in-adelaide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/56619\/","title":{"rendered":"Chalmers cannot rule out gas tax fight at Labor conference in Adelaide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A high-profile\u00a0gas debate could spill across the Adelaide Convention Centre,\u00a0Jim Chalmers has conceded\u00a0on the sidelines of Labor&#8217;s national conference.<\/p>\n<p>The party&#8217;s rank and file are pushing for increased gas taxes, endorsed by Greens and independents but largely resisted by Labor&#8217;s most senior figures.<\/p>\n<p>The Treasurer has previously attempted to shift focus to reforming the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax, and Anthony Albanese has resisted the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Sky News&#8217; Andrew Clennell asked Mr Chalmers on Thursday whether the gas tax debate would make it to the floor of Mr Albanese&#8217;s carefully planned conference.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Chalmers said: &#8220;That remains to be seen&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The words that I&#8217;ve seen talk about the appropriate arrangements which recognise we have to balance our international obligations as a reliable supplier,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are strong views about gas taxes, not just in this room but around the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve already taken steps on the PRRT. We&#8217;re\u00a0working very hard to get the gas reservation scheme in place and we&#8217;re working hard to secure our fuel supplies and this is part of those considerations as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He contended he and the Prime Minister had made it clear &#8220;it is not on the government&#8217;s agenda&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if the tax idea could be revived before the next election, Mr Chalmers said it would not be on the agenda for &#8220;the foreseeable future&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The proposal\u00a0was\u00a0championed by the Australian Council of Trade Unions, which had called for a 25 per cent tax on gas exports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Independent ACT Senator David Pocock also mounted a national campaign in support of the measure, which was supported by backbench MP Ed Husic.<\/p>\n<p>Economists estimate\u00a0a 25 pr cent gas export tax could raise between\u00a0$4 billion\u00a0and\u00a0$17 billion\u00a0annually.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the conference, Assistant Immigration Minister Matt Thistlethwaite rejected suggestions Labor was preparing to introduce a new gas tax.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0a draft proposal. It\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0been adopted yet,\u201d\u00a0Mr\u00a0Thistlethwaite told Sky News earlier this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said the government had already made substantial changes to the taxation of Australia\u2019s natural resources through reforms to the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Albanese government also adopted a 20 per cent gas reservation policy, which was initially proposed by former opposition leader Peter Dutton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister had also publicly ruled out imposing a gas export tax during the 2025 federal election campaign, dismissing the idea as a \u201cpopulist\u201d proposal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe middle of a global fuel crisis is the worst possible time to\u00a0jeopardise\u00a0these partnerships, or the investment that underpins
