{"id":57107,"date":"2026-07-23T21:05:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T21:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/57107\/"},"modified":"2026-07-23T21:05:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T21:05:16","slug":"paul-okon-engstler-transfer-news-socceroos-sydney-fc-midfielder-signs-with-bundesliga-club-fc-koln","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/57107\/","title":{"rendered":"Paul Okon-Engstler transfer news: Socceroos, Sydney FC midfielder signs with Bundesliga club FC Koln"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sydney FC midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler\u2019s move to Bundesliga club\u00a0FC K\u00f6ln\u00a0has been confirmed, with the Socceroos World Cup star\u2019s transfer after one season in the A-League described by the club as \u201cone of the most significant outgoing transfers in recent years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move for the 21-year-old, who started Australia\u2019s opening World Cup win over Turkiye and loss to USA during a tournament where he impressed in the middle of the park, was reportedly \u20ac1million ($1.7m AUD), according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FC Koln, based in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, finished 14th last season. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has been a 12 months to remember for Okon-Engstler, who arrived back in Australia for his first season of senior football having arrived from Portuguese powerhouse Benfica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had progressed through the academy system of Portugal\u2019s most successful club and featured in the Portuguese second division prior to joining the Sky Blues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his first season, during which he made his pro debut with Sydney FC, Okon-Engstler stood out in his 30 appearances across all competitions, while supplying two assists, winning their Player of the Year award in a season that culminated in a Grand Final appearance. Amidst that, he was a key part of Australia\u2019s FIFA Under-20 World Cup squad in Chile.
