Pauline Hanson has written to Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, pledging to assist him in changing the law to prevent ISIS fighters from returning home.<\/p>\n

Thirteen Australian men, including a Perth-born doctor nicknamed “Dr Jihad,” are being held in an Iraqi prison while seeking a possible return.<\/p>\n

The leader of One Nation has expressed her party’s commitment to supporting legislation that aims to keep individuals associated with terrorist groups out of Australia.<\/p>\n

She stated that One Nation will collaborate with the Coalition on any legislation intended to strengthen Australia’s counter-terrorism laws.<\/p>\n

“One Nation will vote with the Coalition, in both chambers, for legislation that strengthens Australia\u2019s counter-terrorism laws to the fullest extent permitted by the Constitution, including the laws governing temporary exclusion, terrorism offences, bail, citizenship consequences, passport issuance powers and post-release supervision,” her letter reads.<\/p>\n

“We will support every lawful measure necessary to protect Australians from those who voluntarily joined terrorist organisations overseas.<\/p>\n

“The Coalition wrote the current laws and knows exactly where they now need strengthening.<\/p>\n

“Let\u2019s work together to draft these bills. We will back them. I do not care whose name is on the paper.<\/p>\n

“I care that it passes before the gates of that Baghdad prison open.”<\/p>\n

Ms Hanson emphasised that the safety of Australians is more important than Coalition criticisms of One Nation.<\/p>\n

“You and your colleagues spend their days attacking One Nation. I am setting that aside, because the safety of Australians matters more,” the letter adds.<\/p>\n

“You said this Government rolled the welcome mat out for Islamic State terrorists and that we need to shut the door to people who are going to bring hate and violence to our shores.<\/p>\n

“I agree with you. This letter asks whether you meant it.<\/p>\n

“My office is available to meet before Parliament resumes.”<\/p>\n

The Albanese government has been called out for claiming it cannot stop suspected ISIS fighters from returning to Australia<\/a> because of the High Court, despite the court never having ruled on the Temporary Exclusion Order regime.<\/p>\n

The fresh dispute follows revelations that 13 Australian men suspected of fighting for ISIS may be released from Iraqi prisons and seek to return to Australia.<\/p>\n

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke suggested the men would be free to return to Australia because powers to block individuals had been pushed to “the edges” of what was legally possible.<\/p>\n

“The reality has been that the (Temporary Exclusion Orders) threshold really can\u2019t be lowered. The High Court has made that pretty clear,” Mr Burke said.<\/p>\n
