{"id":58519,"date":"2026-07-26T05:25:21","date_gmt":"2026-07-26T05:25:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/58519\/"},"modified":"2026-07-26T05:25:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-26T05:25:21","slug":"anthony-albanese-insists-labor-is-transparent-after-powerbrokers-blocked-ed-husics-gaza-motion-at-national-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/58519\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthony Albanese insists Labor is \u2018transparent\u2019 after powerbrokers blocked Ed Husic\u2019s Gaza motion at national conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anthony Albanese has insisted the Australian Labor Party is &#8220;transparent&#8221; after internal powerbrokers shot down former minister Ed Husic\u2019s Gaza debate at Labor\u2019s National Conference.<\/p>\n<p>The Chifley MP, who lost his ministry following Labor\u2019s election victory last year, said he would not be deterred from speaking out after party officials prevented his proposed motion from reaching the conference floor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They can put me in a freezer, I don&#8217;t give a\u00a0sh*t,&#8221; Mr Husic told reporters on Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His remarks came after a planned debate on Israel&#8217;s actions in Gaza collapsed when the seconder for his motion withdrew following backroom negotiations, preventing delegates from voting on the proposal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to ABC Insiders on Sunday, Mr Albanese addressed rumours he shut down the debate to avoid a shift in the party\u2019s position on whether Israel was committing genocide in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been\u00a0contributions on the floor of the\u00a0conference, including from Josh\u00a0Burns and Basem Abdo, two people\u00a0who are considered in their\u00a0approach,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to see a two-state\u00a0solution. We want to see Israelis\u00a0and Palestinians living side by\u00a0side. We want to see that issue\u00a0advance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On whether Mr Husic was \u201chelping or hurting\u201d Labor on the issue, Mr Albanese said it was \u201cfine by me\u201d that the Chifley MP was contributing to the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike every other delegate,\u00a0he has a right to come along and\u00a0pursue whatever they say is or see\u00a0as their objective. And that&#8217;s fine\u00a0by me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no problem\u00a0with any delegates of the conference\u00a0having their say and making their\u00a0contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/63879657137934fb62eb96143eb49c82.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Israel-Palestine debate to \u2018heat up\u2019 ALP conference\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Mr Albanese was further pressed on contributions at the conference being managed outside of the public eye.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the\u00a0most transparent political\u00a0conference in Australia by far,\u201d the Prime Minister said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt compares with the closed-door meetings of the Liberals or the Nationals. The Greens had a challenge to the leadership without anyone knowing for many months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re a transparent\u00a0party, (the National Conference was) broadcast live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Husic argued Labor had become too reluctant to allow disagreement within its own ranks and warned the party was damaging itself by treating internal debate as a threat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think there&#8217;s been a broader issue \u2026 that the experiences of the Rudd-Gillard years were so divisive that people are almost traumatised into a position that anything that looks like debate (or) a divide means that the government might topple over,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to be able to find a way to disagree respectfully and try and work with people and have that discussion.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The proposed motion\u00a0stated\u00a0Israeli authorities and security forces had &#8220;deliberately targeted Palestinian children, resulting in genocide and atrocity crimes in the Gaza Strip and war crimes in the West Bank&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although the debate never\u00a0proceeded, Mr Husic said the humanitarian crisis remained one of the defining moral questions facing Australia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Anthony Albanese has insisted the Australian Labor Party is &#8220;transparent&#8221;
