Crowds have descended on Australia\u2019s ski resorts as snowfall and cool temperatures bring a small reprieve to a bleak season, though snow-making conditions are not tipped to last long.<\/p>\n
A busy Sunday on the ski fields follows what was the coldest day of the year for many to start the weekend.<\/p>\n
Glen Innes Airport in the NSW Northern Tablelands plunged to -5.8C overnight, Weatherzone data shows, while at 9.30am Sunday Thredbo was still -1.3C.<\/p>\n
Skiers were quick to hit the slopes at Thredbo on Sunday, as they were at nearby Perisher.<\/p>\n
Australian snowboarding influencer Rani Siregar posted on Sunday that people were enjoying the conditions amid a lean season.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo sugar-coating it, this is one of the worst seasons we\u2019ve had in a long time. But you don\u2019t get to pick the conditions, you just gotta make the best of what you got,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
A spokeswoman for Vali Resorts, which runs the Falls Creek and Mt Hotham ski resorts, said both fields had 6cm of snow in the past week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a run of natural snowfall in the forecast and with plenty more events still to come, it\u2019s shaping up to be a great second half of the season,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
On the ground at Thredbo, one of the ski resort\u2019s staff said there was some enjoyable fresh snow on some of the resort\u2019s unmarked runs on Saturday, though that snow had hardened on Sunday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a couple of fine days on the way before the next storm crosses on Tuesday and Wednesday \u2026 The cloud up high should clear for a mainly sunny Sunday, enjoy it and have a good day,\u201d the staffer wrote in a daily weather report.<\/p>\n
Australia\u2019s ski resorts have had a lean year so far, with an unseasonably warm May and June crippling much of the start of the season. <\/p>\n
Images of one narrow man-made ski run at Victoria\u2019s Mt Buller last month created much chatter online, as most of the resort\u2019s alpine landscape was exposed grass and mud.<\/p>\n
It has made the past week\u2019s snowfall a welcome reprieve.<\/p>\n
Perisher has received 2cm of snowfall in the past seven days, and the carpark up Kosciuszko Road is full on Sunday morning. The live cameras show Mt Buller is busy too now the slopes have been coated in snow.<\/p>\n
The Bureau of Meteorology\u2019s Angus Hines told NewsWire that warm conditions up at the ski resorts would melt the snow though.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere hasn\u2019t been any fresh snow today or yesterday, sort of a little late last week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut it\u2019s not ideal snow making conditions either because it\u2019s actually tending pretty mild on the mountains today. We\u2019re looking at high temperatures \u2026 between three and six degrees on a lot of the alpine slopes.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo just a little bit warm to really try and either make snow or keep the snow that\u2019s there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Elsewhere conditions were \u201cpretty benign\u201d, Mr Hines said.<\/p>\n
The country was \u201cin between\u201d weather systems that brought a powerful cold front and low snowfall to Tasmania late last week, but a bit of that rainfall was still causing minor flooding.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of the country\u2019s had pretty mild weather, although, having said that, it has been very cold through the last couple of nights in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland \u2026 temperatures deeply into the negatives in some of those places.\u201d<\/p>\n
A \u201cfairly feeble\u201d cold front hitting southern WA will gather momentum as it heads east in the coming days.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will pick up a bit of steam by the time it reaches Tasmania on Tuesday, so we\u2019re looking at another pretty strong wintry blast down in the very far south on Tuesday,\u201d Mr Hines said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMelbourne will get a little taste of that on Tuesday with some rain and then some cooler temperatures as we head into Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cSydney should have a pretty bright week for the most part, maybe tending showery towards the end of the week, but plenty of sunny days before that
