The proposal for a 63,000-seat stadium at Brisbane’s Victoria Park for the 2032 Olympics and Paralympic Games has been cleared by the federal environmental department.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a decision released on Wednesday, the department declared the proposal to construct and operate the Brisbane Stadium in Victoria Park and the National Aquatic Centre in Spring Hill was “not a controlled action.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

The decision is a declaration that the construction of the stadium is unlikely to have a significant impact on protected matters, no matter how the proposal is undertaken.\u00a0<\/p>\n

David Hinchliffe, from advocacy group Save Victoria Park, said the decision by the environmental department was not a surprise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“The environmental thing was just a side issue for us,” he said. “That result was always expected.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said the group was focusing its efforts on protection under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act.<\/p>\n

He said the campaign had five applications in place under that Act.<\/p>\n

“They are the strongest grounds in which to be able to get protection and to take legal action,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Preparatory works to build the 63,000-seat stadium will begin once the land is transferred to the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) on June 1.<\/p>\n
