(ABC Goldfields: Nicholas R Ward)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">His diary, donated to the Leintwardine Historical Society, in Herefordshire, England in 2025, has become a source of fascination for local historians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Tilly kept obsessive notes that tracked everything from breakfast to stationery prices, providing a window to the past, helping historians better understand the turn of the century on the Eastern Goldfields.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Mr Tilly omitted one key detail \u2014 his name.<\/p>\n<p>From opposite sides of the world<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Vivian Simkins, archivist of the Leintwardine Historical Society, said the diary immediately caught her attention.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"DSC01033\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/5a0e2aba228b14f654c238d568346736.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mr Tilly&#8217;s diary was found in the small town of Leintwardine, 200km north-west of London. (ABC Goldfields: Nicholas R Ward)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We thought, what&#8217;s this diary about Australia doing in a place like Leintwardine? How did it get here?&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A friend in the village who was born here, grew up here \u2026 when her parents died, she was left with lots of papers and information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;She brought me this journal, and had no idea where it had come from or who it was by, because \u2026 there&#8217;s no signature in the book.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Without a name, it was impossible to work out who he was.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Simkins tried searching the passenger lists for the steam ship Malwa which carried Mr Tilly to Australia but the lists were incomplete and the author of the diary remained elusive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Hitting a wall in the UK, she contacted the Eastern Goldfields Historical Society (EGHS) in Kalgoorlie-Boulder for help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That&#8217;s when I thought, oh, I&#8217;ll try the Goldfields and see if they know anything about it,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And they had the same problem. (Supplied: Eastern Goldfields Historical Society)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">What followed was a six month effort culminating in the diary retracing the author&#8217;s footsteps back to the Goldfields.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After talking with people at the EGHS, the Leintwardine Society decided the diary should return to where it was written.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I was due to go out to Australia anyway, I thought I&#8217;ll take it out,&#8221; Ms Simkins said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">And in April 2026 over a century after it&#8217;s departure Mr Tilly&#8217;s diary arrived back in the Goldfields and into the hands of Rosie Stroud.<\/p>\n<p>There and back again<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;His nickname was Tilly, from that information, we couldn&#8217;t really identify him,&#8221; EGHS Executive Officer Ms Stroud said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Historical Diary Kalgoorlie 2\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/fab2348b35ae648d6ab2653c32dd48f9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">One volunteer painstakingly transcribed the diary while others combed over records to uncover Mr Tilly&#8217;s name. (Supplied: Eastern Goldfields Historical Society)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Aside from his work, Mr Tilly enjoyed a number of hobbies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The staple pleasure are pictures, skating, and billiards.
