{"id":59051,"date":"2026-07-27T03:50:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T03:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/59051\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T03:50:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T03:50:10","slug":"man-who-rescued-woman-bitten-by-shark-at-coogee-beach-wins-world-paddleboard-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/59051\/","title":{"rendered":"Man who rescued woman bitten by shark at Coogee Beach wins world paddleboard championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A volunteer lifeguard who helped save a woman attacked by a shark on a Sydney beach has won the world paddleboarding championship amid hurricane conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Charlie Verco competed in the 27th Moloka&#8217;i 2 O&#8217;ahu Paddleboard World Championships in Hawaii on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Almost 100 participants from around the world paddleboarded a 52-kilometre stretch of open ocean from Moloka&#8217;i to O&#8217;ahu in the central Pacific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It included crossing the Kaiwi Channel, known as the &#8216;Channel of Bones&#8217;, which is home to sharks, jellyfish and other marine life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The organisers described it as being &#8220;widely regarded as the sport&#8217;s ultimate open-ocean endurance challenge&#8221;, testing paddlers&#8217; skills, endurance and ocean knowledge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 24-year-old from Sydney won the event for the fourth time, finishing in 4 hours, 18 minutes and 3 seconds, breaking the world record.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mr Verco wearing a yellow swimming tank and shorts smiles as he exits the water on foot.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/293309a7b37440bbf833c8f91faa2d91.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The elite paddleboarder walked out of the water on foot smiling after finishing the race. I&#8217;ve never felt so good in body and mind after the race and it&#8217;s extra special that I was able to set a record at the same time,&#8221; he said in a post-race interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve put years and years of work into it training two to three time a day, six days a week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Verco, who regularly trains in the northern beaches and Sydney&#8217;s east, was training when he helped <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-14\/nsw-man-who-rescued-woman-bitten-by-shark-at-coogee-speaks\/106794890\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106794890\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">save shark attack survivor<\/a> Leah Stewart at Coogee Beach in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It has definitely helped remind me that the ocean is something you have to respect,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-25\/leah-stewart-coogee-shark-attack-victim-update\/106842486\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shark attack victim update<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The 34-year-old&#8217;s brother said she was awake, speaking with loved ones and her medical team and &#8220;remembers the whole event in detail&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m hoping Leah is doing alright and I feel incredibly grateful that I get to have an experience like this in the ocean.&#8221;Hurricane conditions<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Verco had to navigate through &#8220;really big swells&#8221; and &#8220;strong winds&#8221; caused by Category 1 Hurricane Fausto, which was heading towards the Hawaiian Islands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Throughout the week, organisers had been monitoring the hurricane forecasts from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in coordination with the United States Coast Guard and local emergency management partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think with the cyclone we were a little worried about impacting, but it managed to stay far enough away that there was just good wind behind us,&#8221; Mr Verco said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Supporting him along the way in the escort boat was his brother, and father, Jamie Verco, who said the beginning of the race was &#8220;quiet&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mr Verco lying down on a red paddleboard smiling as he comes into shore on a sunny day.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/9487cf11f13a55e5c8dfe9ce578452da.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mr Verco was supported by his father and brother in the escort boat. (Supplied: Moloka&#8217;i 2 O&#8217;ahu Paddleboard World Championships)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The swell wasn&#8217;t lining up with the wind at all and you have to be very patient not to burn a lot of energy trying to chase the swell that would take you in the wrong direction,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Through the middle of the channel he started to speed up and by the end he was really flying.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;About an hour and a half out he said he&#8217;d have a crack at the record and his brother just said, &#8216;Yeah, go for it&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The paddleboarder&#8217;s mother and sister were watching from home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Jamie Verco said he was &#8220;so proud&#8221; of his son.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He&#8217;s worked so hard and he&#8217;s a humble kid who&#8217;s put in the hard yards and does all the work and he&#8217;s got the rewards today,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He&#8217;s been quietly pleased with himself I think.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Race organisers said more than 35 Australians competed in the prone paddleboard competition with Mr Verco, with 38-year-old Stewart Mclachlan coming in second and 28-year-old Stone Harrison in third.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Verco said this year&#8217;s focus was to not &#8220;get ahead of himself&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;My goal was just to have fun with it.
