{"id":60049,"date":"2026-07-28T09:45:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T09:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/60049\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T09:45:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T09:45:06","slug":"australias-most-wanted-man-kazem-hamad-jailed-for-life-in-iraq-for-drug-trafficking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/60049\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia\u2019s \u2018most wanted\u2019 man Kazem Hamad jailed for life in Iraq for drug trafficking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former Melbourne organised crime kingpin, who was deported to Iraq in 2023, has been sentenced to life behind bars for drug trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Kazem Hamad, also known as Kadhim Malik Hamad Rabah al-Hajami, was allegedly a major player in Melbourne\u2019s tobacco wars.<\/p>\n<p>Iraq\u2019s National Centre for International Judicial Cooperation said in a statement on Tuesday that Hamad was sentenced in Baghdad\u2019s Karkh Criminal Court to life in jail after being convicted of importing drugs into Iraq and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe convict is considered one of the most wanted individuals by Iraqi and international judiciaries,\u201d the NCIJC said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is responsible for importing large quantities of narcotics into Iraq and Australia, smuggling heroin, and is linked to transnational organised crime gangs involved in drug trafficking, money laundering, murder, kidnapping, extortion, and organised violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamad has been a person of interest relating to firebombings at Victorian tobacco shops and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>His arrest in Iraq was revealed in January, after the Australian Federal Police provided information to local authorities in late 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The AFP later said Hamad\u2019s arrest had sparked infighting among the crime syndicate.<\/p>\n<p>AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett described Hamad at the time as her \u201cnumber one target\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the AFP released only a brief statement to say they had been informed by Iraqi authorities that a life sentence had been handed down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AFP notes the work of our important partner.
