{"id":60075,"date":"2026-07-28T10:26:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T10:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/60075\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T10:26:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T10:26:19","slug":"hobart-city-council-votes-to-support-aboriginal-land-handback-at-queens-domain-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/60075\/","title":{"rendered":"Hobart City Council votes to support Aboriginal land handback at Queens Domain summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">An Aboriginal land return proposal near Hobart&#8217;s CBD has passed its first hurdle after receiving &#8220;in-principle support&#8221; at a Hobart City Council meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 4.9-hectare parcel of land near the summit of Queens Domain was identified by the council last year as a possible site for an Indigenous-owned cultural centre operated by the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (TAC).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said Monday&#8217;s motion, which passed nine votes to three, had &#8220;strong support around the table&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Councillor Reynolds said those who voted against the proposal had raised procedural questions, including whether the hand back could be blocked at a later stage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we had a state government who did not want this to happen, roadblocks could be put in place,&#8221;  Cr Reynolds said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But we&#8217;ve heard from the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Bridget Archer \u2026 and we know that she sees this as a good idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Whether that process is smooth or takes a really long time is really incumbent on all the partners on this journey. (ABC News: Andrew Cunningham)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In its proposal, the council report referenced ALCT chair Greg Brown, who said the cultural centre would create &#8220;spaces for interpretation, exhibition, and the sharing of stories by Aboriginal artists and cultural practitioners&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For us as Palawa people, serving our community and caring for Country is a profound responsibility and privilege,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Since 1995, the return of land has enabled meaningful cultural, social and economic outcomes for our people; outcomes that are only possible through strong, respectful relationships with government and the broader Tasmanian community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The ALCT has proposed a collaborative land management arrangement with the council to share &#8220;ongoing stewardship of the broader Queens Domain&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;A lot of red tape&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Cr Reynolds said the transfer of the council-owned land would be fairly involved with much &#8220;state government red tape&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-29\/private-landholders-hand-back-properties-aboriginal-land-council\/106727624\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;People do care&#8217;: Why private owners are handing land back<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">It has been two decades since substantial land hand-backs in Tasmania, so private owners are doing it instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We still have to go through quite a lot of process,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We have to go through a separate process to close off a bit of Domain Road so we can access that asphalt space. We have to rehabilitate it.
