{"id":6093,"date":"2026-05-06T20:58:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T20:58:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/6093\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T20:58:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T20:58:07","slug":"isis-brides-to-arrive-in-sydney-and-melbourne-from-syria-as-australia-faces-reintegration-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/6093\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018ISIS brides\u2019 to arrive in Sydney and Melbourne from Syria as Australia faces reintegration challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Women and children linked to the Islamic State have been warned they face big hurdles reintegrating into Australian society when they return to the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The group will arrive in Sydney and Melbourne on Thursday after years in a Syrian refugee camp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Some of the women, who travelled to the Middle East with their partners who wanted to fight for ISIS, will be arrested on arrival, federal police say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-3mk41m-StyledText eze0guv9\">Sign up to The Nightly&#8217;s newsletters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1r9pdr5-StyledSubText eze0guv8\">Get the first look at the digital newspaper, curated daily stories and breaking headlines delivered to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>By continuing you agree to our <a href=\"https:\/\/thenightly.com.au\/subscription-terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Terms<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sevenwestmedia.com.au\/privacy-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Privacy Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">But the children face an uncertain future, with many having grown up in squalid conditions where violence and radical ideologies are commonplace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Four women and nine children have booked tickets from Damascus to Australia, the government confirmed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">They are the latest group of so-called \u201cISIS brides\u201d to return after the collapse of the Islamic caliphate in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">While some women travelled willingly to support their partners who wanted to fight for the Islamic State, advocates for the group say others were trafficked, or only went to the Middle East to keep their family together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">All children in the group of 13 returning home would likely need help integrating into Australian society after years in Syrian camps, while others could need more intensive deradicalisation support, leading extremism researcher Michele Grossman told AAP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThis is going to be very much case by case,\u201d the Deakin University professor said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe can\u2019t make assumptions that all children will respond equally &#8230; to the kinds of indoctrination activities that we know have gone on in those camps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Prof Grossman said support from the community would be crucial to help them recover from years of trauma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cCommunities have to be willing &#8211; with appropriate support, with appropriate knowledge and transparency &#8211; to be part of the picture,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cIf the community is only ever going to turn them away and refuse to have anything to do with them &#8230;
