{"id":61025,"date":"2026-07-29T18:52:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T18:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/61025\/"},"modified":"2026-07-29T18:52:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T18:52:08","slug":"city-of-wanneroo-set-to-shelve-plans-for-potential-council-split-creation-of-new-city-of-yanchep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/61025\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Wanneroo set to shelve plans for potential council split, creation of new \u2018City of Yanchep\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The City of Wanneroo\u2019s bid to explore a potential city split and create a new local government in Perth\u2019s northern suburbs has been shelved, after it was revealed the move would be too costly and resource-intensive at this time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">More than a year after council first voted to investigate carving out a new local government \u2014 which some councillors proposed naming the \u201cCity of Yanchep\u201d \u2014 elected members this week adopted an internal report recommending the proposal not proceed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">In the preliminary report into the feasibility of reviewing the city\u2019s district boundaries, officers said doing it now would present significant financial, resourcing and strategic challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cBased on current information available, administration notes that progressing a district boundary review at this time would present significant challenges in delivering the city\u2019s strategic priorities under the Council Plan 2025-2035,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cUndertaking a district boundary review alongside these commitments would require substantial additional organisational capacity and financial resources over an extended period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cShould a proposal ultimately be approved, implementation may also involve governance transition arrangements, including the appointment of commissioners, which could further affect continuity during a period of significant organisational change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">With no comparable local government subdivision proposals of a similar size ever undertaken, city officers examined major NSW council amalgamations to help estimate the resources that may be required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The report found any proposal would likely take at least two to three years to develop, with assessment by the Local Government Advisory Board and the Minister for Local Government expected to take up more time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">It also estimated staff costs associated with developing the proposal would total between $600,000 and $850,000 a year, excluding consultancy and other associated costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The proposal to look into splitting was initiated by Cr Paul Miles in February 2025 amid concerns about the city\u2019s rapid population growth and vast geographic size, with Cr Miles stating \u201cwe have to do something\u201d as pressure on the local government continues to grow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The City of Wanneroo\u2019s population is estimated to be around 250,000, up from 178,000 in 2013, and is on track to overtake the City of Stirling as WA\u2019s most populous local government, if it has not already done so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Wanneroo, which at 685sqkm is Perth\u2019s second-largest local government by area, is forecast to grow to more than 430,000 residents by 2046.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Despite the rapid development, city officers reiterated that now was not the right time to pursue a boundary review, particularly as development continues in the city\u2019s far north.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1785351128_403_35dbcaf631ff685c420da12a2ccac10830195601.jpg\" alt=\"The City of Wanneroo is the second largest local government by area in the Perth region. \" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconThe City of Wanneroo is the second largest local government by area in the Perth region.
