(ABC: Lindsay Dunbar)

Signs politics is impacting a relationship

Our experts say there are two main signs that political differences are beginning to impact your romantic relationship.

“[Firstly], if it is taking a toll on you and your satisfaction, your happiness, your general wellbeing,” Mr Tebbey says.

“The first person you might have that conversation with is the partner.

“You can say, ‘look, this is really affecting me’ and ‘can we talk about it and try and work out if there’s a way around it?’.”More on relationships

Secondly, he says if the relationship is experiencing “conflict, a breakdown in communication or a breakdown in respect” it might be time to reach out to a professional, like a relationship counsellor.

“[They] can help unpack that and help either rebuild that respect or that communication in a way that avoids the conflict or, if it’s necessary, help that relationship reach its natural conclusion,” Mr Tebbey says.

Here’s how to navigate tensions

Dr Ferracioli recommends couples try not to take differing views personally.

“It’s very important to remember that they’re not doing that to upset you or frustrate you,” she says.

“It’s the conclusion they’ve come to, given the things they care about and how they see the world.

How these couples are staying together despite political differences

More Australian relationships are struggling because of political divides. But experts say this does not have to be the end.

“[And remembering] you might disagree about political issues, but there’s a lot in the relationship that’s meaningful and that brings you joy.”

She also recommends:

Being charitable during discussionsPicking your battlesTrying to reconstruct arguments with factsDon’t automatically assume bad motivesFind out if there’s compromise

“For example, if you have someone who is critical of the current migration settings, it’s not very helpful to go, ‘You’re critical of migration, so you must be a racist,'” she says.

“You have someone who might be mistaken about the facts, and then if you engage with them in good faith, and you’re charitable about their worldview, you might be able to meet somewhere in the middle.”

Mr Tebbey says it can be helpful to have conversations with someone who sees the world differently, to better understand their perspectives and that often “they come from a perfectly reasonable and good-faith position”.

“And while we may never fully agree with them, it’s a good idea to be challenged as long as that’s done in a respectful way.”

Mary says so far, her and her partner’s discussions about politics have not been “difficult” because they each listen with curiosity rather than criticism.

“My advice would be to hold honest and curious conversations whilst maintaining respect and integrity,” she says.

“If it becomes too much, shut the conversation down and come back to it when you have capacity or make it known that it’s not something you wish to discuss.”

Have you struggled with differing political views between you and your partner, friends or family?
