{"id":6129,"date":"2026-05-06T22:26:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T22:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/6129\/"},"modified":"2026-05-06T22:26:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T22:26:13","slug":"city-of-belmont-called-out-for-lack-of-evs-while-backing-push-for-climate-change-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/6129\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Belmont called out for lack of EVs while backing push for climate change support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The City of Belmont council has backed calls for the State and Federal governments to do more to help local government deal with climate change while pointing out their own shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">At its April 28 meeting, the council unanimously backed the WA Local Government Association seeking funding and other support from the Federal and State governments to reduce emissions and address the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">A report to the council said the city had already felt the effects of climate change, including more damage from storms, urban heat islands and declining water availability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThese impacts are expected to intensify over coming decades, with climate projections indicating the frequency and severity of extreme weather events and heatwaves to increase,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cLocal governments are legislatively required to plan for and mitigate climate risks, yet often lack access to the necessary data, modelling, expertise and funding to effectively deliver this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Cr Jarod Harris said the city also needed to show it was doing its part, citing the lack of EVs in the city\u2019s fleet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cWhile asking for assistance on EV transition, we\u2019ve not tried electric fleet vehicles or installed public chargers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cOur handful of EV chargers in the basement of the Hub have largely sat idle for six years, while each fleet vehicle is instead filled with ever-costlier fuels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cWe\u2019re being reminded daily that our supply of fossil fuels is high cost and highly volatile, dependent as it is on the whims of foreign leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cReducing fossil-fuel use would, yes, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but would also be saving us money and that means spending ratepayer money more responsibly and efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">While endorsing the city\u2019s stance on climate change, mayor Robert Rossi was less cool on the idea of providing free EV charging, saying it would come at a cost to provide and raised a question of fairness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cOffering free charging, for example, means all ratepayers effectively subsidising a small group of EV owners,\u201d Mr Rossi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cWe wouldn\u2019t do the same for petrol users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cI\u2019ve also seen examples where free charging can be misused, with the same vehicles occupying bays for long periods when charging stations first arrived in WA, although now it\u2019s more pay user, which is good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThrough planning, we can encourage more EV-charging infrastructure using incentives and requirements in new developments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThis is an area where the WA planning department and commission could play a stronger role, not just the city doing all the lifting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">He said he was proud of what the city had done and was planning to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cIs there room for improvement? Of course there is,\u201d Mr Rossi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cBut it\u2019s just as important to recognise how far we\u2019ve come, acknowledge what\u2019s being achieved right now and keep building on that progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cAdvocacy is the key. We need to keep on working with the State Government and relevant agencies to help deliver on these goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Cr George Sekulla said the provision of EV chargers should be left to the market and not the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cA lot of charging of EVs can be done privately from a standard plug quite effectively, two overnight charges a week will get a family by in terms of the distance they need to travel on a weekly basis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">He agreed the city should have more EVs in its fleet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThat\u2019s certainly a no-brainer sort of investment that I think we should be looking at, particularly given the change in market conditions relating to the cost of fuel,\u201d Cr Sekulla said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The city\u2019s strategic community plan 2024\u20132034 promotes sustainable practices and \u201cclimate resilience\u201d, while its environment and sustainability strategy 2023\u20132033 supports a transition to sustainable energy and transport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThe city is committed to future proofing its operations, assets and services by embedding consideration of emerging climate related hazards into its planning and decision-making processes,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The City of Belmont council has backed calls for the State and Federal governments to do more to&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":6130,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[917,3683,1774,152,335,149,1961,464],"class_list":{"0":"post-6129","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-perth","8":"tag-central","9":"tag-environment","10":"tag-local-government","11":"tag-news","12":"tag-perth","13":"tag-politics","14":"tag-southern","15":"tag-wa-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6129","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6129"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6129\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/6130"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6129"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6129"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6129"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
