senator Bridget McKenzie backs Pauline Hanson’s ISIS plan

Angus Taylor has called on Pauline Hanson to back his plan to deal with ISIS brides after the One Nation leader unveiled her Protecting Australians from Foreign Terrorist Fighters Bill.

The Australian revealed on Wednesday that Senator Hanson had sent the 22-page Bill and a lengthy explainer to fellow crossbenchers.

It was accompanied by a missive criticising the Opposition Leader for not responding to another letter she penned to him last week – something he remedied that evening, according to the paper.

The Bill proposes a foreign terrorist fighter exclusion order, barring those on one from entering the country.

It would also stop automatically-issued return permits while a case is before court, make it harder to get bail for terrorism offences, block passports for anyone subject to an exclusion order and make it a crime to help an unauthorised return.

Speaking on Thursday, Mr Taylor said the Coalition had been “talking for months” about its measures, which he said would stop the cohort of women and children linked to ISIS fighters in Syria from returning to Australia by prohibiting “third-party repatriation”.

He said “One Nation and others” can support the legislation.

“(That plan) is in front of the parliament now,” Mr Taylor said.

“I’ve written, responded to … One Nation, and I’ve asked them to support that legislation.

“It’s there, ready to go, and it’s been introduced to the parliament some time ago.”

Mr Taylor’s comments come despite Nationals frontbencher Bridget McKenzie on Thursday stating “the opposition welcomes crossbench contributions to strengthen our laws when it comes to returning ISIS fighters” but lamented that it was needed and called on Labor to “pony up”.

“It’s not up to the crossbench or the Liberal and the National Party opposition to be drafting laws to keep Australians safe – that’s actually the role of government,” she told Nine’s Today.

“The government has an army of well-trained solicitors at their disposal through the Solicitor-General’s Department, the Home Affairs Department.

“They should be drafting laws to make sure we can actually keep Australians safe.”

Senator McKenzie said “ministers should pony up … and use the laws that are already in existence” to “cancel passports, refuse to issue travel documents or, indeed, delay the issuing”. “Now, none of those options were taken into consideration by the Labor Party with the return of the ISIS brides,” she said.

Opposition spokesperson for defence industry Phil Thompson told Sky News “leaders of all political persuasions talk at different times throughout the cycles” when asked about any potential agreement between One Nation and the Coalition on a Bill.

“But, you know, the one thing that we’re focused on now is making sure that we have the alternative to what this bad government is and put it through things that want to keep people safe, which is stopping ISIS supporters and fighters coming back to Australia,” he said.

Responding to Senator Hanson’s Bill, Anthony Albanese said “no one had any sympathy for people who have gone and fought for ISIS overseas”.

However, when pressed on whether he would back One Nation’s proposed measure, the Prime Minister reiterated the support for “the rule of law” and noted 45 men who fought with ISIS had returned to Australia before Labor came to government.

“That’s because citizenship brings certain rights under the constitution, and we will do everything we can within the law, though, and we will also, of course, provide no support for any of these people to return to Australia.”

The government has remained adamant that it has not supported the ISIS-linked women – many of whom are now before the courts – and children who had returned to Australia.

Only a single Temporary Exclusion Order has been issued to a member of the cohort – a measure that comes from ASIO advice.

Read related topics:<a class="topic_tag"
