A mother and daughter accused of keeping a slave while living under Islamic State rule in Syria have revealed plans to fight the charges.<\/p>\n
Kawsar Ahmad, 54, and Zeinab Ahmad, 31, were charged with slavery offences after returning to Australia on May 7 following more than a decade overseas.<\/p>\n
The pair, along with other family members, had been detained in the Al Roj internally displaced persons camp in northern Syria following the capture of Baghouz, Islamic State\u2019s final stronghold, in March 2019.<\/p>\n
The two women appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday morning where they were both committed to stand trial in Victoria\u2019s Supreme Court.<\/p>\n
Kawsar Ahmad pleaded not guilty to four crimes against humanity offences of enslavement, possessing a slave, using a slave and engaging in slave trading.<\/p>\n
Zeinab Ahmad pleaded not guilty to two charges of enslavement and using a slave.<\/p>\n
Police allege the two women, and other members of their families, left Australia in 2014 before settling in Syria in January the following year to join Islamic State.<\/p>\n
It is alleged Kawsar Ahmad\u2019s husband, and Zeinab Ahmad\u2019s father, Mohammed Ahmad, bought a Yazidi teenager as a slave for $US10,000 in June 2017.<\/p>\n
Mohammed Ahmad, who remains in detention in Iraq has not been charged with any offence, allegedly told the girl; \u201cI bought you for the purpose of raping and at the same time, serving the home.\u201d<\/p>\n
It is alleged the woman, who lives overseas, suffered physical and sexual abuse before she was sold to another ISIS fighter in about November 2018. <\/p>\n
She allegedly told police Kawsar Ahmad often threatened her with beatings or being sold, while Zeinab Ahmad treated her badly and was in charge of the house when her parents were not around. <\/p>\n
The Yazidi woman was allegedly sold and traded a further seven times before being freed by Kurdish forces in 2019. <\/p>\n
