Image: InSyde Media <\/p>\n<p>Triple Eight struggled across Darwin and Townsville, well and truly in the shadow of fellow Ford squads Grove Racing, Tickford Racing and Dick Johnson Racing.<\/p>\n<p>The team has been open about needing to better understand the characteristics of the Mustang package, while also acknowledging an immense workload has taken its toll.<\/p>\n<p>Feeney made a strong start to the Perth Super440 with second in Friday practice, declaring he felt \u201ca lot more competitive from the first run\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still not the fastest car, so we\u2019ve still got a fair bit to work on, but I think they\u2019ve done a great job at trying some new stuff over the last couple of rounds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTownsville we tried some stuff that obviously didn\u2019t work. We didn\u2019t have the most competitive cars, but we keep trying some things, trying to learn our toolbox for this car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s our biggest thing at the moment, trying to understand what makes this car go fast. I think we\u2019ve still got a bit to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Triple Eight managing director Jamie Whincup has returned to the paddock in Perth, having been absent from Townsville due to commitments at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.<\/p>\n<p>Weighing in on the team\u2019s fortunes during Friday practice, Whincup said the squad deserved the scrutiny it has come under.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/speedcafe.com\/supercars-news-2026-triple-eight-manufacturer-switch-ford-general-motors-mark-dutton\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Why Ford switch is proving Triple Eight\u2019s biggest challenge yet<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been smashed pretty heavily from the media, but we\u2019ve deserved it because we set ourselves a really high standard and we haven\u2019t been able to deliver to that standard,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been great that some people have put that into perspective of course; we\u2019re still second in the teams\u2019 championship and second in the drivers\u2019 championship, so it\u2019s not dire straits, but it\u2019s not at our level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whincup backed his team to return to the top of the pecking order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you really dig deep it all makes a lot of sense, but then the hard work now is trying to find that balance in the car to make it really, really quick and make these two drivers happy, which they haven\u2019t been the last couple of rounds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I get it, I was a driver once, it\u2019s no fun when the car doesn\u2019t do what you want it to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll get it back there, I\u2019m sure. I don\u2019t know how long that\u2019s going to take, but we\u2019ll get it back there sooner rather than later and start having some fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Supercars Championship will return to the track for back-to-back qualifying sessions from 9:45am AWST.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Broc Feeney on track at the Perth Super440.
