Payne had earlier claimed pole for Race 1, giving him top spot for both of the afternoon’s sprint races.

A saved set of fresh tyres proved decisive. Payne and teammate Kai Allen sat in the lane at the end of the opening segment to keep a new set for the run that mattered, and the championship leader used them to go to the top with 10 seconds left on the clock.

Feeney bounces back

Feeney’s front-row start marked a turnaround from the first session, where he had qualified 13th. The Red Bull Ampol driver briefly led the second part, going 0.14s clear of Rylan Gray before Payne’s late lap settled the order. Kai Allen qualified third, ahead of Thomas Randle and Chaz Mostert.

Broc Feeney’s Red Bull Ampol Racing Mustang during the Perth Super440. Gray was the early pacesetter, going to the top on the first flying lap before Feeney and then Payne moved ahead.

Andre Heimgartner qualified sixth, ahead of Brodie Kostecki, Waters, Gray and Anton De Pasquale, who completed the top 10.

Wood misses cut by 0.006s

The opening segment, run on the super soft tyre, set positions 11 to 24. Payne topped it on his first run with a 54.04s lap despite a poor exit from Turn 6. On the final runs, Randle, Feeney and Kostecki all went quicker than Payne, while De Pasquale displaced Allen to drop the Grove driver to sixth in that segment.

Ryan Wood was the first car outside the top 10, missing the cut by just 0.006s to Heimgartner and lining up 11th. Will Brown qualified 12th, extending a difficult run of qualifying form.

Kostecki penalised for Race 1

In separate news confirmed during the session, Brodie Kostecki was handed a two-grid-spot penalty for the afternoon’s Race 1 following a driving infringement. Stewards ruled he impeded Heimgartner on the run to the final corner in the earlier qualifying session. Kostecki had qualified sixth for Race 1 and drops to eighth, behind teammate Gray.

Race 2 of the Perth Super440 is scheduled for 3.55pm local time, 5.55pm on the east coast, and follows the weekend’s opening race at 12.45pm.

Race 2 qualifying result

Pos
No.
Driver
Best lap

1
19
Matt Payne
54.0667s

2
88
Broc Feeney
54.2849s

3
26
Kai Allen
54.3563s

4
55
Thomas Randle
54.4108s

5
1
Chaz Mostert
54.4437s

6
8
Andre Heimgartner
54.5044s

7
17
Brodie Kostecki
54.5513s

8
6
Cam Waters
54.5561s

9
38
Rylan Gray
54.5804s

10
18
Anton De Pasquale
54.6223s

11
2
Ryan Wood
54.1783s

12
888
Will Brown
54.2491s

13
777
Declan Fraser
54.2918s

14
7
James Golding
54.3595s

15
4
Jack Le Brocq
54.3771s

16
31
Jayden Ojeda
54.3807s

17
96
Macauley Jones
54.3880s

18
20
David Reynolds
54.3997s

19
9
Jobe Stewart
54.4274s

20
14
Cam Hill
54.4371s

21
11
Jackson Walls
54.4652s

22
10
Zach Bates
54.4887s

23
99
Cooper Murray
54.5248s

24
3
Aaron Cameron
54.5826s

<a href="https://autoaction.com.au/digital#flipbook-auto-action-digital-d026-june-24-2026/1/_" target="_blank" class="square" onclick="if (!window.__cfRLUnblockHandlers) return false;
