I think we couldn’t be any clearer than that.”

Senator Hume said the Liberals already had a coalition with the Nationals.

“That coalition has been a foundation of very successful governments for 80 years now, and it will continue to be so,” she said.

However, earlier in the week, Liberal frontbencher Andrew Bragg was seemingly open to a future deal between the Liberals and One Nation.

Senator Bragg initially dismissed questions of a preference deal between the Coalition and Pauline Hanson’s party and talk of a three-way coalition as too early to tell before the election.

“Well, we’ll work out if there needs to be a coalition, we’d work it out then,” he told the Today show.

However, pressed later if he was leaving the door open to a deal with One Nation, Senator Bragg said: “Well, we would definitely work out whoever would be interested in being in a coalition with us, if that’s what the numbers were. Of course, we’re not crazy”.

Grilled on those comments and whether the Coalition would accept support from One Nation in a minority government, Senator Hume said it was “an extraordinary hypothetical”.

“There isn’t an election for at least 18 months,” she said.

“Governments have formed minority governments in the past with all sorts of parties.

“Our intention is to win outright, and we do that by making sure that we present a credible plan and a credible team to deliver that plan.”

Pressed further on the Coalition being supported by One Nation in a minority government, Senator Hume shot back: “I’ve said that we have no plans, no intention … to have a coalition with One Nation”.

“That is our commitment,” she said.

“We are already in coalition. We plan to govern as a coalition, as a Liberal-National coalition.”

Earlier on Sunday, Liberal frontbencher Dan Tehan said parliamentarians would “have to wait and see” the make up of the next parliament before accepting any potential support from One Nation.

Pressed if he would “say no”, Mr Tehan said “well, who knows what the Australian people will present when it comes to a parliament”, noting support from the Greens for Labor.

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor initially seemed to be leaving the door open to a deal with One Nation as the right-wing populist party’s polls soared and the Coalitions faltered.

However, as One Nation appear to have plateaued and in some instances declined, Mr Taylor has ramped up his rhetoric attacking One Nation.

Senator Hanson has said she is not pursuing a deal with other conservative parties, but neither would she be opposed to it.

Read related
