Springvale Road in Glen Waverley has ended another Melbourne hotspot’s eight-year streak as the country’s most crash-prone road after more than 394,000 insurance claims were analysed from across Australia in 2025.

The Key Details

Melbourne accounts for nine of the nation’s top 10 crash locations

Toyota, Mazda and Hyundai are the most commonly crashed alt="gettyimages 1140056294 2"/>The Finer Details

The results are in and Australia’s most crashed vehicle brands have been revealed, while Melbourne’s roads dominate the rankings as the most dangerous – or at least crash-prone – according to the AAMI Crash Index.

The latest data dump also highlights which motorists are most likely to end up making an insurance claim.

<p class="iompba0 _1lalutrhc _1lalutr2k0 a6hzxt6 href="https://www.carsales.com.au/mazda/?__source=editorialArticle&driver_crosssell=editorial.in.article.link" rel="nofollow noopener">Mazda and Hyundai owners.

The data also found drivers aged 65 and over were the most likely to be involved in a crash, while male drivers recorded more claims than females.

As for vehicle colour, white remains Australia’s most crash-prone paint job.

The findings suggest demographic and vehicle trends remain largely unchanged, with older motorists and male drivers having featured prominently in insurance claims over the years.

However, AAMI says the overwhelming majority of crashes are low-speed incidents that could be avoided with better driving habits.

Springvale Road in Glen Waverley has dethroned Plenty Road in Bundoora after the latter spent eight consecutive years atop the annual Crash Index.

The intersection of Springvale Road and Ferntree Gully Road was identified as the country’s worst individual crash location, with nose-to-tail collisions accounting for countless incidents.

Victoria dominates the national rankings, with Sydney’s Pennant Hills Road at Carlingford the only non-Melbourne road to appear in the top 10.

The five highest-ranked crash hotspots are:

Springvale Road, Glen Waverley (VIC)

Plenty Road, Bundoora (VIC)

Doncaster Road, Doncaster (VIC)

Maroondah Highway, Ringwood (VIC)

Sydney Road, Campbellfield (VIC)

Across Australia, nose-to-tail crashes accounted for 28 per cent of insurance claims, followed by failures to give way (23 per cent) and collisions with stationary objects (22 per cent).

The highest-risk period for crashes was between 9:30am and 1pm, while Friday was identified as the worst day of the week for motorists.

AAMI Motor Prevention Manager Mary Kennedy said the data showed preventable, everyday incidents continued to dominate insurance claims.

“Most claims aren’t high-speed collisions,” Kennedy said.

“They are everyday bingles like nose-to-tail crashes, failure to give way and collisions with stationary objects, which means they are also among the most preventable.”

Kennedy encouraged motorists to leave a safe following distance, look further ahead in traffic and take extra care when approaching intersections, particularly on Fridays.

The Road Ahead

While Melbourne again dominates Australia’s crash hotspot rankings, the latest Crash Index confirms that many of the nation’s most common crashes occur at relatively low speeds and are avoidable.

<img
