polling reveals who would win a federal election right now

The next federal election may not be a two-horse race between Labor and the Coalition – with new polling putting One Nation ahead of the Liberals in primary support.

Polling conducted by Roy Morgan discovered that if a federal election were held now the Labor Party would win a majority against either One Nation or the Coalition.

Primary support for the Australian Labor Party (ALP) is at 27.5 per cent, compared to One Nation which is down 1.5 per cent to 24 per cent.

Support for the Liberal Party is up 1.5 per cent to 20 per cent, while support for the Nationals remains unchanged at 3.5 per cent.

Roy Morgan’s polling found overall government confidence dropped 1.5 points to 67.5.

More Australians, 59.5 per cent, say the country is “going in the wrong direction”, which is up 1.5 points.

All three parties held significant differences in government confidence – with ALP supporters holding the highest government confidence at 137.5 out of 100.

Greens supporters have a government confidence of 70, down 16.5 points, above Coalition supporters on 50 – up 7.5 points.

One Nation supporters have a government confidence rating of just 6.5 – down 7 points.

Roy Morgan suggested that at the next federal election the contest is set to be between the Labor Party and One Nation.

They stated that “the complicated nature of the next federal election means there will be contests between the ALP and One Nation, the ALP and Coalition, One Nation and the Coalition, and any three of these parties against the Greens, Teal Independents, and other minor parties such as Katter’s Australian Party (KAP)”.

This comes as Pauline Hanson banned news outlets, The Guardian, ABC and The Age from an event on Monday where eight candidates ahead of the Victorian state election in November will be announced.

Read related topics:<a class="topic_tag"
