Incredible footage has emerged of a jiu-jitsu-obsessed nurse taking down a violent patient at a hospital emergency department.<\/p>\n
Brisbane nurse Daniel Nelson posted CCTV footage of the incident to social media that has since been viewed more than 1.3 million times.<\/p>\n
Vision shows Mr Nelson escorting a man out of the hospital, but he turns around and throws an object at the nurse then charges at him through the foyers doors at the Royal Brisbane Women\u2019s Hospital Emergency Department about 2am in October 2024.<\/p>\n
The man appears to throw several punches at Mr Nelson, but the nurse soon overpowers his attacker and soon has him on the ground.<\/p>\n
The nurse is able to hold and restrain the man until security arrive and assist the nurse.<\/p>\n
Mr Nelson alleged he was assaulted by an intoxicated patient in an area of the hospital that was not visible to security or other staff.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is what many people never see,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe had been spitting on the floor, abusing staff and generally behaving like an absolute grub. <\/p>\n
\u201cWas asked to leave, I opted to escort him out and grab a cheeky coffee from the coffee van parked out front while I was out there. <\/p>\n
\u201cIn a stroke of genius he decided he wanted a cuddle. <\/p>\n
\u201cSafe to say \u2026 it didn\u2019t work out the way he expected.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think he anticipated the nurse having an obsession with Jiu Jitsu for over 10 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Nelson said while he was able to defend himself, it could have been a different situation if a more vulnerable nurse was attacked.<\/p>\n
He said nurses, doctors, paramedics and other healthcare workers were there to help people, even those who are intoxicated or make poor decisions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat should never come with the expectation of being abused or attacked,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cViolence against healthcare workers isn\u2019t \u2018just part of the job,\u2019 it\u2019s unacceptable (and) alcohol is no excuse. <\/p>\n
\u201cTo all my colleagues who continue to show up despite this sort of behaviour: I see you, and I appreciate what you do every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
A report released by the Nurses Professional Association Queensland last year revealed more than 16,000 violent incidents were recorded against Queensland healthcare workers in hospitals across the state, amounting to about 45 assaults every day.<\/p>\n
