That\u2019s the simple explanation from industry veteran Paul Morris amid the unfolding saga over the controversial decision not to penalise Kai Allen on Sunday at the Perth Super440.<\/p>\n

Stewards cited a series of mitigating factors<\/a> in electing to take no action despite two of his tyres having read below the 16 psi minimum while on the grid.<\/p>\n

Supercars has lodged a notice of intention to appeal but is yet to make public comment on the matter.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s believed to be the first time Supercars has taken such a stance, highlighting the distinction between Supercars officials and Motorsport Australia stewards.<\/p>\n

Grove Racing expressed shock at Supercars\u2019 move<\/a> when news of the action emerged this morning.<\/p>\n

Stewards noted Allen\u2019s tyres were within an \u201cacknowledged TPMS (tyre pressure sensor monitoring) accuracy of 0.4 psi\u201d, which raised eyebrows within the industry.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThey were under the minimum tyre pressure and that\u2019s just the same as being underweight or over fuel capacity,\u201d noted Morris on social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a measurement you can\u2019t go below and there\u2019s never really been any tolerance for it.<\/p>\n

\u201cTeams make allowances to make sure they don\u2019t go under, and this is the crux of the matter why Supercars are appealing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason they\u2019re appealing is if they don\u2019t, every other team in pit lane will be up in arms, and the whole integrity of tyre pressure monitoring will be out the window.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Then] you might as well get rid of it. So that\u2019s why they\u2019re doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morris said Grove did a \u201cbetter job of defending the case\u201d than Supercars did of prosecuting it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you read the transcript of the stewards\u2019 decision, they just do a ripper job of confusing the stewards,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s all they did and any team would do the same, that\u2019s their job, to try and get themselves off the hook.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve made a simple little mistake. They haven\u2019t allowed for the cooler conditions on the grid.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve gone under and unfortunately, under\u2019s under, it should be a disqualification from the race.\u201d<\/p>\n

How Allen escaped disqualification despite tyre breaches<\/a><\/p>\n

The minimum pressure rule was introduced as a safety measure following Lee Holdsworth\u2019s tyre failure and heavy crash at the 2014 Sandown 500.<\/p>\n

Supercars has adjusted the minimum figure over time, with the exact number having a major impact on how hard drivers can push during races.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust get rid of the tyre pressure monitoring, it\u2019s something that we don\u2019t need,\u201d added Morris.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe this is the catalyst just to scrap the idea and just let the teams get on with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first controversy involving minimum tyre pressures and the policing of the rule.<\/p>\n

At Hidden Valley in 2021, Nick Percat was able to keep his third-place finish despite two tyres having dipped below the minimum while on the grid.<\/p>\n

In that case BJR had self-reported the issue and was given permission to change the offending tyres before the race started.<\/p>\n

Stewards ultimately elected only to strip BJR of the teams\u2019 championship points awarded in that race, despite noting the recommended penalty is disqualification.<\/p>\n

Jake Kostecki\u2019s Matt Stone Racing Commodore was disqualified at the very next event for a tyre pressure breach while on the grid.<\/p>\n

More recent tyre pressure related cases have involved the sensors not being fitted (Walkinshaw TWG, Sydney 2026) or not working (MSR, Taupo 2025).<\/p>\n

The former example resulted in disqualification for Chaz Mostert, while the latter netted a fine and teams\u2019 points penalty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Kai Allen at the Perth Super440.
