A probe has been launched after a shocking near miss between two Qantas aircrafts on Sydney Airport\u2019s main runway.<\/p>\n
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has confirmed an investigation is underway following an incident last week, which almost resulted in a catastrophe.<\/p>\n
On July 27, air traffic control gave clearance for a Boeing 737 Qantas flight from Canberra to cross between runways at the airport.<\/p>\n
At the same time, another Qantas flight, a Bombardier DHC-8 scheduled to arrive from Queenstown, New Zealand, was preparing to land.<\/p>\n
Thankfully, the catastrophe was averted after controllers spotted the conflict and were able to advise both crews.<\/p>\n
Evasive action was then taken, with the 737 held back while the Bombardier completed its safe landing.<\/p>\n
However, the ATSB has now confirmed an investigation into how the potential disaster unfolded is now underway.<\/p>\n
In a statement published to its website, the bureau attributed the frightening incident to a \u201cbreakdown of co-ordination\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cATC detected the conflict and advised both crews, with the 737 stopping after the holding point,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe investigation is continuing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nobody was injured in the incident and neither plane was damaged.<\/p>\n
A Qantas spokesman said that both pilots were acting with permission.<\/p>\n
\u201cBoth Qantas aircraft were cleared to proceed following instructions from air traffic control and we will support the ATSB in the investigation,\u201d the spokesman said.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for Airservices Australia said that safety was the government-owned organisation\u2019s \u201ctop priority\u201d, adding that it would be assisting the investigation, which is due to be completed by the end of the year.<\/p>\n
