The men\u2019s Australian Open will be played at North Adelaide Golf Course in 2028 as part of a new deal that will secure the revamped layout at least six male or female editions of the event over a seven-year period.<\/p>\n
The partnership between Golf Australia and the South Australian government will include three men\u2019s and three women\u2019s Opens being played at North Adelaide \u2013 which is undergoing a $45m Greg Norman redesign \u2013 from 2028 to 2034.<\/p>\n
North Adelaide is also due to host the LIV Adelaide event from 2028 onwards, but there is no guarantee that LIV Golf will continue beyond this year, with Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund to end its financial backing of the tour.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Australian Open is one of the great championships in world golf, but in recent years we have not always had the certainty needed to plan and build the event to its full potential,\u201d Golf Australia chief executive James Sutherland said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur aspiration is clear. We want our Australian Opens to be recognised among the world\u2019s top golf tournaments, both for men and women. <\/p>\n
\u201cNot dissimilar to other major tournaments, that ultimately requires greater certainty around venues, dates, partners, players and the fan experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cCertainty matters. It allows us to plan ahead with government partners, broadcasters, commercial partners, tours, players, volunteers and fans. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt gives us the best chance to secure the right dates, build the strongest possible fields and create anticipation that will continue to elevate the Australian Open year-on-year.\u201d<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s men\u2019s Australian Open will be held in Victoria at Kingston Heath, with a venue yet to be announced for the 2027 edition of the tournament.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are in constructive discussions with the Victorian government about other Australian Opens in this upcoming cycle,\u201d Sutherland said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe opportunity for South Australia to host in 2028 arises because the Presidents Cup will be in Melbourne that year.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the past 50 years, the men\u2019s Australian Open has only been hosted outside Victoria or NSW twice \u2013 once at Royal Adelaide in 1998 and once at The Grand on Queensland\u2019s Gold Coast in 2001.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s women\u2019s Australian Open was played in South Australia at Kooyonga and will remain in the Festival State next year when it shifts to Royal Adelaide.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor some time, we have been engaged with Golf Australia discussing the potential of bringing both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s Australian Opens to Adelaide,\u201d South Australian <\/p>\n
Premier Peter Malinauskas said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Australian Open is a must-stop event on the Australian sporting calendar, and we have the potential to grow it here in Adelaide.\u201d<\/p>\n
