Emergency services have issued an evacuation order after an “extremely dangerous” fire broke out in a large industrial shed containing sulphur at Port Adelaide in South Australia. <\/p>\n
The South Australia Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) responded to the blaze on Thursday morning, reporting that the fire was burning sulphur and producing a large volume of smoke, according to ABC<\/a>.<\/p>\n Authorities have instructed anyone within a one-kilometre radius of Moonta Road in Port Adelaide to evacuate the area immediately.<\/p>\n “Emergency services are on scene, the smoke is considered toxic,” the MFS said.<\/p>\n The MFS added that the smoke was drifting in a south to south-easterly direction, and members of the public were urged to stay away from the affected area.<\/p>\n The South Australia Ambulance Service confirmed that one person had been transported to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.<\/p>\n Around 18 fire trucks, including aerial appliances and hazardous materials (HAZMAT) vehicles, have been deployed to the scene.<\/p>\n

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Phil Rogers told ABC Adelaide that the blaze was smouldering inside a shed measuring approximately 100 metres by 50 metres.<\/p>\n He said the one-kilometre exclusion zone mainly affected nearby businesses, noting that residential properties were located beyond the restricted area.<\/p>\n “It is fully contained within the premises that it is being housed in, but it is very, very difficult to put out,” Rogers said.<\/p>\n “A sulphur fire, what generally happens is that it’s a smouldering fire. It doesn’t actually have a huge amount of flame as such, but it does produce quite a toxic smoke.<\/p>\n “There are a couple of different ways we can fight this fire, by either separating the product or smothering the fire in some way, but the problem for our crews right at the moment is the visibility within the shed itself.<\/p>\n “We are working with management to work out the best way to move more product away from what is burning and save as much of the infrastructure in and around this area.”<\/p>\n Rogers said excavators were being used to move the sulphur, adding that the material itself could also be used to help smother the fire.<\/p>\n “It is one of the techniques that we can use,” he said.<\/p>\n “Alternatively, we can withdraw it from the shed and smother it with sand and dirt, which is also available onsite.”<\/p>\n He noted that workers at the facility were experienced in responding to similar incidents, although this fire was larger than those typically encountered.<\/p>\n “They do have incidents like this of a more minor nature, and they have dealt with similar situations in the past where we’ve been able to do exactly this,” Rogers said.<\/p>\n He added that around 50 people had been involved in the firefighting<\/a> operation, with crews being rotated regularly to ensure their safety.<\/p>\n “Our primary concern is the safety of all the firefighters and management personnel who are here,” he said.<\/p>\n “Obviously, breathing apparatus is being utilised, along with all of our personal protective equipment.”<\/p>\n News.Az<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\tBy Nijat Babayev<\/a>
