The victim of a mining tragedy has been remembered as a deeply loved and devoted father as a local community starts to rally around his grieving family.<\/p>\n
Andreas Loizou, known to his loved ones as \u201cCarpet\u201d, died a fortnight ago in a horrific mining incident at the Peak Downs site in Moranbah, in Central Queensland.<\/p>\n
The 54-year-old was a passenger in a utility vehicle when it ended up in a crash with a haulage truck on one of the access roads to the site.<\/p>\n
Now, two weeks on from the tragedy, tributes have been paid via a fundraising page in his memory and in support of his children.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the wake of the heartbreaking news of the loss of Andreas \u2018Carpet\u2019 Loizou under such tragic circumstances, Jacob and Sophie have lost a deeply loved and devoted father far too soon,\u201d the GoFundMe reads.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile nothing can ever ease the pain of losing someone so special, we hope to help them as they navigate this unimaginable time of grief.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tributes have also been made by members of the mining community following the tragic events of July 24.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Mining and Energy Union was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of a fatality at Peak Downs in the early hours of Friday, July 24,\u201d a statement on the union\u2019s website reads.<\/p>\n
Mr Loizou\u2019s employer, Thiess, offered sympathies after confirming the news on Facebook.<\/p>\n
\u201cEarly this morning, there was an incident at Peak Downs mine that resulted in the passing of one of our team members, Andreas \u2018Andrew\u2019 Loizou,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe extend our deepest sympathies to Andrew\u2019s family, loved ones, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n
