At the centre of that idea is Yunfei Yang, founder of SilkGear.<\/p>\n
Still in his twenties, Yang has taken on one of Melbourne\u2019s most recognisable retail addresses with a surprisingly simple philosophy: people shouldn\u2019t have to buy technology based solely on specifications, marketing videos or online reviews. They should be able to experience it.<\/p>\n
During his opening address, Yang reflected on becoming a father just a few weeks earlier, saying the experience had changed his perspective and reinforced his desire to build something that inspires the next generation rather than simply selling products.<\/p>\n

Instead of stripping away its history, SilkGear has retained much of the building\u2019s character, preserving its intimate spaces, timber floors and multi-level layout while giving it a distinctly modern purpose.<\/p>\n Speaking at the launch, Yang described today\u2019s consumer electronics market as \u201cextremely crowded\u201d, arguing that while there is no shortage of products, there are too few places where people can experience them properly. He said Melbourne\u2019s appreciation for design, innovation and retail culture made Melbourne the natural home for SilkGear\u2019s first showroom.<\/p>\n City of Melbourne Councillors Gladys Liu and Rafael Camillo also attended the launch, welcoming SilkGear\u2019s investment in the CBD.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n A showroom that feels more like CES<\/p>\n Walking through SilkGear, it quickly became clear this wasn\u2019t simply another electronics retailer.<\/p>\n From the moment you step inside, the showroom opens into a carefully curated collection of emerging consumer technology. It feels more like a compact technology exhibition than a conventional store, bringing together products that make far more sense once you\u2019ve seen them move, worn them, sat in them or picked them up.<\/p>\n Laifen, which invited Digital Reviews Network to attend the launch, is positioned alongside brands including MOVA and SilkGear\u2019s greater home care range, reinforcing that this isn\u2019t a collection of isolated brand boutiques but a carefully curated technology ecosystem. Its high-speed hair dryers, the thoughtfully designed P3 Pro shaver \u2014 which we\u2019ve previously reviewed<\/a> \u2014 and the expanded Wave electric toothbrush family provide a familiar touchpoint within that broader experience.<\/p>\n One of the evening\u2019s biggest crowd pleasers was AgiBot. AI recording and transcription have developed rapidly over the past year, and PLAUD remains one of the clearest examples of AI solving a genuine pain point rather than simply adding another buzzword to the box.<\/p>\n The broader range extended across Bambu Lab 3D printers, xTool laser engravers, robotic cleaning systems from Narwal, Roborock and MOVA, Navimow robotic lawn mowers, PETKIT smart pet products, Hyperice recovery devices, Ultrahuman smart rings, Lofree peripherals and Sharge charging accessories.<\/p>\n That breadth establishes what SilkGear is trying to do without every brand needing its own paragraph and a small ceremonial trumpet.<\/p>\n A smaller AgiBot companion demonstrated expressive movement during the launch, showing how rapidly consumer-facing robotics is evolving.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Standout moments<\/p>\n Then there was the LiberNovo chair.<\/p>\n Friends from the MOVA team warned me not to sit in it because I wouldn\u2019t want to leave.<\/p>\n They weren\u2019t wrong.<\/p>\n I spend most of my working day in a Herman Miller chair, so I approached it with a fair amount of scepticism. A few minutes later, I found myself wondering whether I\u2019d actually swap the Herman Miller for one.
