Pauline Hanson has declared she doesn\u2019t care if migration cuts affect Australian businesses despite a warning from the sector that Labor\u2019s proposed visa crackdown could pose risks to the economy. <\/p>\n
This week, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke cancelled a speech expected to contain a suite of measures to cut Australia\u2019s net overseas migration, including restricting the families of Australian citizens from applying for family visas. <\/p>\n
Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Andrew McKellar subsequently warned against taking drastic measures, warning it could exacerbate skill shortages in key sectors. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are seeing net overseas migration numbers trending down,\u201d he said, referring to recent tweaks to student visas.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe should continue on that pathway to get to sustainable levels.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t need to shoot ourselves in the foot unnecessarily by doing something that is draconian and goes too far.\u201d<\/p>\n
One Nation\u2019s permanent migration target is 130,000 compared with Labor\u2019s 185,000 intake announced in the May budget. <\/p>\n
Though Senator Hanson told News24 this figure would be subject to annual review, when asked about the government\u2019s proposed migrant cuts, she insisted Australia needed \u201ca breather\u201d. <\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t care what people think. Whether it\u2019s going to affect their businesses (because) they\u2019re not going to sell that many products,\u201d she said on Thursday. <\/p>\n
\u201cOr the universities, because they won\u2019t have the number of foreign students coming in here. I don\u2019t care.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy concern is for those Australians that can\u2019t get a roof over their head and a decent standard of living and way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Burke\u2019s speech, which was due to be held at the National Press Club, is expected to be rescheduled. <\/p>\n
A spokesman for the minister confirmed the cancellation was due to Mr Burke\u2019s remarks not being ready. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe speech will deal with the migration system as a whole,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n
