Yesterday, Greens MP Vica Bayley moved a motion in parliament highlighting “skyrocketing material costs and supply shortages” triggered by the Middle East conflict.<\/a><\/p>\n The motion, which passed with the support of Labor, 18 votes to 15, called on the government to either:<\/p>\n Table [in parliament] any revised stadium construction cost estimates developed in response to the current fuel crisis.<\/p>\n Or, develop a new cost estimate as soon as possible and table it by August 11.<\/p>\n “Few believe, I think, the $1.13 billion figure that Premier [Jeremy] Rockcliff has named up in relation to this project,” Mr Bayley told 936 ABC Hobart today.<\/p>\n “A lot of people expected [the cost] to go well beyond that \u2014 and that was before the conflict in the Middle East.”<\/p>\n The cost of the project was estimated at $715 million in late 2022, but by late last year it was estimated at $1.13 billion. (Supplied: Mac Point Site Master Plan Report)<\/p>\n He said the conflict’s impact on fuel prices had led to significant increases in the cost of construction materials, including concrete, steel and PVC products.<\/p>\n “This is the opportunity for the government to be honest and transparent about the costs of the stadium.<\/p>\n “And give the Tasmanian people \u2014 the people that are actually going to be paying for this project \u2014 full knowledge and full transparency about how much it will cost.”<\/p>\n Minister can’t guarantee further cost blowout<\/p>\n Infrastructure Minister Kerry Vincent was asked today whether the government would comply with the motion.<\/p>\n In response, Mr Vincent said: “That will be discussed, and the government always works through everything they possibly can.<\/p>\n “When the numbers are available, I’m sure the premier and the minister for Macquarie Point, Mr [Eric] Abetz, will work through those.”<\/p>\n Kerry Vincent says he can’t guarantee the stadium’s cost won’t increase beyond the current estimate. (ABC News: Simon Farrell)<\/p>\n He said the tender process to build the stadium was currently underway<\/a> and said updated figures would become available “as necessary, when necessary”.<\/p>\n Mr Vincent acknowledged that the Middle East conflict had affected global construction costs, but noted that contingencies had been put in place in relation to the stadium.<\/p>\n Asked whether he could guarantee the stadium’s cost would not rise above $1.13 billion, he declined to do so.<\/p>\n “I certainly can’t, and I won’t be, no.<\/p>\n “Prices are what they are, and we need to work through that.<\/p>\n “And it’s like anything else we do in life, we manage the costs of all projects.”<\/p>\n Current estimate includes $150m in escalation costs<\/p>\n The Macquarie Point Development Corporation (MPDC) is the statutory authority responsible for planning and delivering the stadium.<\/p>\n The ABC has contacted the MPDC for comment in relation to the motion.<\/p>\n In February, its chief executive, Anne Beach, provided parliament’s Public Accounts Committee with an itemised breakdown of the stadium’s $1.13 billion cost estimate.<\/p>\n It included:<\/p>\n $640.5 million for construction cost$302.69 million for development cost, including contingencies and consultants’ fees$5.6 million for headworks and authority fees$17.9 million project resourcing$147.6 million escalation costs$18.5 million day-one operational costs Anne Beach gave a parliamentary committee a cost breakdown of the project in February.
